Hi, I'm a retired Lecturer from Farming stock. Inherited my father's 420G. He bought it new in 1970 for around £2300.00 i think. He died in 1988 leaving it to me in his will. It has been up on blocks in the garage for 23 years till both my daughters decided to get married within 8 weeks of each other. My mother aksed them if they would like their Grandfathers car to go to their wedding in but would have to ask Dad as he left it to him. This was in August 2011, the first wedding was in August 2012,then October for the second. I went it to my local garage and said, fancy MOTing my 420G for my daughters wedding. He had a look and put a new battery on but no compression. He towed to the garage. He said that I could do a rolling restoration or a full restoration. Very green with these things I said, do the lot. The answer came back, if you help then I'll do it. The next 9 months I was at the garage, evenings, weekends, cutting, cleaning, taking appart, grinding, filling, sanding, shotblasting priming, undercoating and watching the final 10 coats of 18 been done. By June of 2012 it was done. The only part left to do is the head lining. But everything else has been done back to show room condition. Thats the short version.

Welcome to the forum HSB,

Looking forward to the long version with photos.

Follow this link Mark V - X 420G - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the 420G section for advice, information and to post your own contributions. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You may also like to visit the UK Region section by following this link UK - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in this country.

Enjoy the forum.

What a generous offer for Graham.
A welcome from Australia, HSB.
No 420G for me now but was a long time ago...widest body Jag ever made if I have my facts right.
I am sure a before and after would be enjoyed by most when you have more experience with the site. Enjoy.

Forums can be a bit tricky at first.

You can Reply to any post quoting the original post as I have done here by clicking on the Quote button (arrowed in red):

If you only want to reply without quoting, click on the Quick Reply button (arrowed in blue).

There is no restriction on attaching pictures to your posts. To add a picture, click on the Paper Clip button (arrowed in green) and browse for the picture on your computer.

If you're completely new to all this, let me know and I'll give you more details on attaching pictures.

Graham

You are correct 6ft 6" wide. This is just amazing, a message from Austrailia. When I have permission to post some pictures, I have loads to choose from. So before & after engine, axles, seats etc. Keep a look out down under.

It looks fantastic. I've enlarged it for a better view.

Definitely worth starting a new thread in the 420G section to show your restoration.

I can move your posts #14 and #15 there as a new thread to which you can then add further posts and pictures as a record of the restoration.

Yes please, I'll get the hang of this the more I do it. Once I've found where you've put them then I'll sort some out. I've got 300 to choose from.

Here's the link to your new thread in 420G section:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/m...oration-94729/

It's a good place to post your restoration pictures.

I can change the title if you prefer something different.

I don't recall ever seeing either a Mark X or 420G in America, though I am sure I saw some in England long ago (1980s). My dad bought an XJ12 Series I in 1972 or '73 after spending a sabbatical in England and the front of the 420G looks quite like a Series I XJ stretched to be a very large car.

I love the look of the 420Gs and yours is a beautiful example.
