Another 1988 XJS 5.3L
Hi,
Thanks to all for the fantastic resources. I bought this car in July and have been taking care of some deferred maintenance. It's got 81k miles and from the looks of it was garaged and well cared for by the previous owner.
The car ran solid when I bought it, but the temp gauge was resting on the top of the "N" without any AC. Reading the warnings about overheating I wanted to address this first.
Local recore prices were pretty high so I went ahead and ordered a Wizard replacement. Now the car seems to settle in on the low edge of the "N'.
Along with the radiator, I did hoses, water pump, belts. Since I had everything out, I also replaced the front mail seal and that corrected a pretty massive oil leak.
California has some pretty stringent smog requirements, so I figured I would change plugs too before getting it tested. So after the radiator related work I replaced pcv, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Again the forum here was a tremendous resource - I now empathize with everyone who has replaced 1A and 1B plugs and removed the rear bolts on the throttle pedestal.
Smog passed with surprisingly low numbers so now I'm driving it and building a list of what next.
So far candidates include:
Alternator - still charging but it's throwing the lamp light for about 30 secs at startup).
AAV valve - when warm, the car hunts between 800-900rpm at idle.
Front rotors and pads - car pulls right when braking.
I also have a faint gas smell in the boot so I suspect I've got a loose fitting somewhere I can't seem to locate yet.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the forums.
Jim
