Default brake lights turn on after removing key

Greetings,

Just acquired a 2006 XKR that only came with valet key, of course and locked trunk so battery dies as brake lights are on when the key is removed. I drilled a hole under trunk lid to pop the trunk so now the battery can be disconnected. Brake lights go off when the key is inserted and the brake lights work correctly while driving. A hard reset has been performed a few times but the problem persists. Switching relay in the fuse box didn't change anything but the brake lights went off when it was out which gives a hint that the light module is being triggered from relay and not a malfunction. Fuses are good. The third brake light in the rear window does not come on at all. I've ordered replacement microswitches for the brake light switch but doubt the problem is the fault of that switch assembly.

If the third light worked, I could disconnect the current wires to the brake light filaments and wire them to the third brake light circuit which bypasses the light module, but again, that third brake light has never come on. More investigation!

Am I wrong that this forum does not have an archives section to query?

I will continue my detective work to explore hardware but it is rather puzzling that the lights come on when the key is removed.

Anyone have any experience with this issue?

Welcome to the forums jrnsr,

As the US didn't get the aluminium bodied X150 until 2007, I assume you have the earlier steel bodied X100.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. A read there would have helped you to avoid drilling holes in the car.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also use the US Midwest Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-midwest-39/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

By the way, the original full sized battery charges up well but I did substitute a large battery that checks out with a higher voltage. Problem still persists with battery charger attached for higher voltage yet.

In all my searches, I read that pulling up on the brake peddle may release the switch. There is a ratchet cam in the Brake switch that may be adjustable.

How do I get to those that rely to my queries?

Bob,

Finding the right thread would be a good start.

Here is your similarly named Intro thread:

....... and another similarly topic you posted in XK8/XKR forum:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...d-park-230432/
