Brand newbie getting first Jaguar

Hello all,
I am so excited to be a part of the club. My wife and I got married 10 years ago and instead of the obligatory limo I decided to rent a Jaguar and fell in love. Well after 10 years I am finally entering the world of the luxury car. I have a friend that is getting rid of his '92 XJ-6 Vanden Plas and I am getting a screaming deal by any measure.
I have been spending most of my pre own time looking up history etc on the car and I was confused as to the Series III designations with the v12 and xj-6. I think I have it right that the Vanden Plas counts as a Series III and is not the v-12 but also isn't the 300's right? I know the XJ has been around for A LONG TIME and the cut offs seem to run over each other depending on "trim" and year.
In anycase I am happy to be a part of the club and will post up more once I actually get it. (have to go to another state to pick up in a few weeks).
I also do know of one problem that I will post about later to get some help but I want to try a few things I have read here first to make sure I am not asking stupid questions.
Thanks again.

You are right the model designations can be confusing I think yours could be a series III or an XJ40, for help and advice you should look here XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum or here XJ40 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum once ou get that sorted out check the regional section also Southwest US - AZ TX NM OK - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

If you haven't already done so you should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

Welcome to the forum Rutty,
A very happy tenth anniversary to you both.
It doesn't help that Jaguar used XJ6 for five series of models from 1968 through to 1997! VdP is always a trim level but is the best trim level.
To help with model recognition, this is a Series III .....

..... and this is the later XJ40

Follow Norri's link to the appropriate tech section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.
Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Wow thank you all for the amazing welcome. I have been on other forums and usually we have the rude first welcome. This is much better.
As soon as I pick up the Jag (on the 11th of may) I will put up more info. I think this one has the square one piece headlights. Can't remember from when I saw it last.

One more thing, a flat cap is now required in your wardrobe, however, not mandatory on every drive...it just has to be available.
Welcome again!
