Smile Bye Bye Lexus, hello Jaguar - and you guys too!

Hello All! I'm David from NE Scotland, UK.

Following an unwelcome encounter with a typical UK pothole my trusty old Lexus LS400 has gone to pastures new, it was time for a change anyway...wonderfully reliable, but a little "clinical" and lacking in character, it was never a car that had you looking over your shoulder as you walked away after parking!

After a little head scratching and having never owned a Jaguar, the hunt was on for a S-type. Needed to be a low mileage, good history, 3.0 ltr version and owned by someone who cared for the car.
Looked at a lot of dogs within a 50 mile radius of home - Oh dear! Some awful examples with owners who had an inflated opinion of worth and condition...I needed to look further afield.

I stumbled across a very poor advert on a well known UK motoring forum - no pictures and a few lines of description which finished with "being advertised on behalf of friend" I'd normally ignore such adverts, but I gave the number a ring...elderly gentleman just boughta new XF, owned a couple of other Jaguars too and the S-type needed to go. It ticked all the boxes - 53k miles, full dealer history, unblemished paint etc and wanted a seemingly low price. It sounded worth a 500 mile round trip so off I went with Father-in-Law in tow.

It was better than I expected - every reciept from new, drove nicely and looked great. Air-con is a little weak and there is slight thump at the front which I hope will be roll bar links/bushes or lower shock mounts but everything else works as it should. The deal was done with Father-in-Law itching to buy should I have walked away!

It's been with with me for a month now and I'm rather taken with it...surprisingly economical, love the retro early MKII Jaguar looks and it gets a loving look over my shoulder when I leave it parked up...I've made a good choice!

Finally, great looking forum with stacks of useful information...I'll look forward being a part of it.

David

Welcome to the forum David,

That must have been some pothole to write off the Lexus.

Sounds like you've got a good deal on the S-Type.

Thanks for the welcome Graham

Lexus still drove with heavy clanking - just the cost of parts was a little eye watering (not unlike Jag!) looking at some thing like £1k in parts to repair and it was a good excuse to look for something else.

A speculative advert, with issues declared, on a free web selling site saw it sold for £600 within an hour...happy days!

Hello David Ive just bought my s type 4l and very impressed after Audi etc. My weak air con was just low gas. Im still looking for that clunk front left even after new ball joints and sway bar mounts etc. Will be taking shocks out soon to check. What did you find was the noise. I went to Aberdeen once in July and it was still cold and wet in 98. Sunny Australia still 25 every day in Autumn. Regards Paul
