I live in Seattle.
so recently I've noticed a loud thump just a second or so after selecting Reverse. also, a similar thump when shifting into drive. the car drives well otherwise and no shifting problems after it get moving.

Welcome to the forum Christopher,
Sorry to hear about the transmission problem. The XJ6 must be reliable if this is the first time in eight years you've had issues.
Follow this link XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ6 Series I,II & III section if your 1986 is a late Series III or this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-25/ if it's an early XJ40 for help and advice.
Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User ID button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You might also want to visit the Northwest US Region section by following this link Northwest - Washington/Oregon/Idaho & SW Canadians - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forum.
