I've just poked my head in here to read about issues with Jag X-Types. Currently I have a 1998 Contour V6 with 5-speed, sunroof, keyless, SVT dual exhaust. (pic) Of course I'm interested in X-Types because they're like a luxury version of the Contour. Same general lines with more power, AWD, and a better interior.
There's a 2004 light green X-Type 3.0 in my town for sale, only trouble is it's an automatic. Sounds like the issues with X-Types aren't too bad unless I lose the transmission.

Welcome mate, but you won't get too far with comments like "I'm interested in X-Types because they're like a luxury version of the Contour".
No offense, but they're nothing alike mate. Hope you enjoy the site, but refrain from comments that'll make the other X owners mad.

No offense intended, but when I look at an X-Type I see the same lines as my Contour. That's not a bad thing to me!
I think I read the Jags are 20% the same as the Ford Mondeo. Contours are of course based on the Ford Mondeo. On the Contour message boards we always called the Contours rental cars", which was pretty much true. But they're actually excellent drivers with a 2.5 and 5-speed, and the handling is top-notch.

Ahh...someone to take the beatings instead of me now! LOL
Good luck my friend. j/k [sm=icon_cheers.gif]
I'm not an expert, but I thought I had read somewhere that the Contour was developed in Europe by Mazda's European division.
Because Ford owns them, it doesn't mean they share much of anything except some technology. Ford owns Volvo, but my S60R has no resemblance to anything Jaguar.
If I'm misinformed on any of that, I stand corrected.

Yeah I think I touched a sore spot, but I really do speak the truth. ![Smile](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Wiki sez the X-Type uses a British version of the Ford CDW27 platform: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_X-Type
The CDW27 platform is used for the Ford Mondeo, Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, and Mercury Cougar.
Many Contour owners have admired the X-Type from afar because they have the same basic lines and engine.

Ahahahhaa, oh man this is funny! I had a similar remark except I compared it to another Ford vehicle. They damned near stoned me to death!!!
Nice to see you aboard
. Just for others to note, he made a post in our Contour forums showing curiousity over an X-type and I referred him here. Lot of these guys don't realize the similarities in driving experience since I take it most haven't been in a nice Contour before. Once you test-drive that X-type, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. It's a subtle yet noticeable similarity when you carve through a nice curve.

Hey Jim, hey there ancientsanskrit!
Well, driving home in my Contour, carving corners and rowing through the gears, I decided I couldn't live with an auto transmission car even if it does have ~45 horsepower more than my car and AWD. So if I find a 3.0 5-speed X-Type maybe so, but I think I'm gonna wait for now. Plus just cuz I have the money doesn't mean I need to spend it, the Contour still has quite a few miles left on it.

Good for you Dan.............I have the 5 speed manual myself, not a massive fan of Autos at this time although every year older I get the more I seem to like them..........funny that aint it....lol
Save your money, maybe even add to it.....keep on the lookout an one will turn up soon no doubt.
In the meantime......you're more than welcome to keep dropping in and checking out the forum until you get your Jag.
Jim
