Default DIY-er New To Jags!

Hey All,

Wanted to drop a note to introduce myself and to enlighten you all to what I and hopefully we will be dealing with over the coming months.

I live in Las Vegas and I am an avid barterer on Craigslist. My wife has always loved the 4 headlight Jags and today I made a deal for a 1996 XJ6 with a 4.0L engine. So my plan is to restore the car and deliver it to her on her birthday in February.

The car needs work but when you learn that I obtained the car for a simple pair of Chinese scooters that are at best worth 350.00 each and I only have about 400.00 into them total, I think I got a good deal.

The cars condition is not perfect by any means.
It suffers from a neglected interior that I am most assuredly going to gut out completely and re-install. Carpets are very dirty, front seats need to be replaced or at least the foam and coverings, headliner is falling apart and then there is a buffet of broken pieces all throughout.

The car also suffers from a non-start issue that the PO had attempted to correct but has finally given up on. Seems as though there is something intermittent that is preventing the car from starting whenever it wants to. It could be something as obvious as the park selector switch but I do not know all the details yet. PO says the car ran perfectly for 9 months and then just started to present this problem.

He feels its a lawn ornament to him now and just wants it gone. Motor has 163,000 on the clock and he says it ran smoothly with no issues. I had originally thought of dropping a V8 in there with all the kits I see but will give the original motor a chance to prove itself before going any further with that.

I am an experienced DIY'er having had a 14 year long love affair with a 1985 Porsche 928S which I did all the work too. My current drain on my wallet is a 2002 BMW X5, 3.0L which is finally starting to prove reliable after replacing and repairing a number of items.

Seriously hoping for the best with the XJ6.
The Porsche 928 website Rennlist was a savior for me to keep that car on the road and I hope this forum is my new long term resource where I can ask questions and offer others advice as I learn about this car and what it takes to keep it reliable.

I can't thank you guys enough.

I will update my CP for sure and I look forward to working this all out with the great new friends I am making.

Looks like I pick the car up tomorrow morning!
Very excited to get started on it.
Going to give it the basic once-over first to get a sense of where I stand. Get a temporary switch hooked up the starter and see if the starter spins. If it does, going to go through the motor and check compression levels.

I can just go ahead and basically gut the interior because I know that I am going to be refurbishing that. My math says that I have about 3500-4000 to put into the car and if I can hold that budget I should have a very decent XJ for the wife to drive.

Will start a specific thread once I get the car picked up and have given it the once over. Will post a bunch of pics too and make it so that others can follow along on the journey!!

As you gut the interior, take care with all the various trim clips. These can be silly money from Jaguar to replace and often difficult to source from breakers.

Welcome to the forum!

Do be careful with the trim pieces. Jaguar interior pieces are very expensive, more so than most of the mechanical bits.
