Default East Bay S.F. Area 96 XJS owner

Hi All: 18 months ago I bought my neighbor's black 96 XJS with 53K mi. It needed a lot of minor work but since then has been nearly perfect.

I'm not skilled at doing my own repair work, so my main puzzle has been whether to take the car to a dealer ($$$), an independent shop specializing in Jags, or a general-purpose shop. I've been doing the last with OK results.

Right now I need to buy some new tires. The existing Pirelli P-4000s aren't worn out yet but they have highly variable wear and one of them begins shaking at about 70 mph. I think they're pretty old.

So, the question is, should I stick with Pirellis or not, and which particular models have worked well on XJS's? I've been looking on Tire Rack and it seems that Pirellis aren't the best-rated.

Any help appreciated!

Hello, Kerry,
If your car shakes as bad at 70mph, your tires are not your only problem. You need to have the alignment checked along with tire balance. Either of those will cause tires to wear unevenly.

Welcome to the forum KerryCurtis,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Tyres deteriorate with time as well as wearing with mileage. Most European manufacturers advise not to exceed 10 years regardless of tread wear. I'll leave it to US members to recommend suitable replacements as there appears to be a widespread dislike of Pirelli on your side of the Atlantic.

Follow this link XJS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
