Default Engine throws a rod

My old jag threw a rod and as I'd just got an old rusty 76 Caddy decided to swap the motor, all the smog gear, etc, fitted a lot easier than a BB chevy, was a bit lighter too drives as smooth as silk, found a sawed off shotgun under the front seat the lady said her husband was some sort of mafia type before he ended up in prison,my question is why the engine died as far as I know iot was never abused had logbooks, regular servicing, got an old MK2 boy didn't bank robbers in Britain love them.
