Hello everybody my name is Jeff and I'm new to the forum. I bought a 2005 Jaguar x type with a 3.0l engine in it about 2 months ago. I'm an ex mechanic so I do as much of the work to my vehicles as I can. Right now I was trying to find a battery drain and I took out the radio unit because I heard a noise coming from there when I put a test light in between the neg cable and the battery post. My problem now is that while I was in the middle of doing that I decided to check the wiring on the gear shifter, so I took out the 4 screws and lifted the top of it up and found no problems there. I put it back together and now I can't get the car to start or go into gear. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thank You

Several quick bits of advice ...
- go to User CP on forum main menu then down to Edit signature to include lasting details of your Jag by year, model, engine, trans etc ... to ensure that advice you receive is always accurate for your car;
- check out the X-Type specific forum to ensure you have all the latest downloads of JTIS manuals, wiring diagrams and other resources specific to your VIN# ... initially, check JTIS Section 307.05a if yours is the 5spd JATCO auto box;
- using this same X-Type section, use the Search tool to scan all previous threads and posts on your problem issue ... perhaps the term "neutral switch" will hint where I believe your problem lies ... or more likely, the wiring connector for same ... you have already been there, so perhaps you dislodged it.
Best wishes for a speedy fix,

Thanks for the help. The only thing I touched was the silver switch with the 2 wires on it, possibly the neutral safety. Other than that I had just drove the car around for about a half hour and then pulled it into the garage. I should have never touched it but I didn't think anything would go this wrong. Maybe I did something to that switch. Thank You Ken and Christine.

No problems ... glad to help, Jeff,
Yes, that is the switch and harness connector I referred to. Don't sweat it ... probably just a connection pin a bit corroded or dislodged. You know the drill ... separate, clean, inspect, securely re-connect and test. I am confident there lies your fix ... but, if not, jump over and post into model specific forum. I'll look for your outcome either here or there.
Cheers,![Icon Toast](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_toast.gif)

Thanks everyone. A quick update. I removed the gear shifter completely from the floor and I removed the neutral safety switch from the transmission. I got both parts from e bay for only 100.00 and the guy is throwing in all the relays for the under hood fuse box. If those don't work I will proceed from there. Before I try starting the car I'm going to be outside it then hook up the battery and then set the alarm by locking the car up. Once I do that I will get in and try to start the car. I may need a wiring diagram for my 2005 x type to get the job done, anybody know where I can view one. Thanks Again Jeff

Still not sure how to post to x type forum. I got the gear shifter and the neutral safety switch today and I installed both of them, not too much work. I closed the doors, hooked up the battery and locked the door which activated the alarm system, I waited 15 seconds- just for the heck of it and then I unlocked the door and got in, the car started right up and I was so glad. Not really sure what the problem was but maybe just the security system needed to be reset. Now I have to find the battery drain and everything will be fine. If anyone needs some pics of the gear shifter with the mounting bracket and the shifter cable, or the neutral safety switch let me know. Thank Again Jeff
