Got the fever again!
Hello all. I recently owned a 2000 XJ8 that turned out to be, well, a disaster. The car came with a clean Carfax and unfortunately had been wrecked including having a new head installed. Finally the car dropped a tranny and away she we went. Believe it or not I'm still haunted by the ride, drive and overall sex appeal of the car and am wanting another. All car manufacturers seem to have at least 1 "bad apple". What model XJ should I avoid? I have currently been browsing over some 95-96 XJ6 and XJR models. ANY advice will be very appreciated!

Welcome to the forums
I'm sorry to hear that you bought a lemonish ride . Anyway, X300s models are my choice too . XJR is way sportier and firmer ride yet a fliying 4 door sedan . If you're comfort seeker then go for Van Den Plus or Sovereign that comes with more doo daats llllooollll

As shaky as the US economy is right now i'm trying to stay conservative. I'm looking at something i could just buy outright for around 5k. This might be an oxymoron as well..lol. If in this price range I'm simply looking for trouble let me know. Thanks for the interest!

Well Inert, I dont think they are mutually exclusive. You can have a love for both. Im no mechanic nor am I an expert, but I was just thinking that a $5K Jag probably wouldnt be the most reliable ride, but could probably make a good project car. Depending uponyour location anything is possible. Iknow when I was shopping for my X type, I ran across a few XJs in that price range. I wasnt in the market for that model so I didnt really take note, but I think theyhad high miles. But they looked nice.As a matter of fact, I was shopping for a MB when I saw a Jag on the lot and got hooked. I still may get my Benz. Itll be an SUV though. I was looking at the ML320, ML430, and the ML500. I still miss towering above the masses sometimes, lol.

Actually Chyrsler was taken over by MB just a few years ago. The 91 and older Benz IMHO were built to a "standard", where as now they are built to a "price". Prime example, a colleague recently spent around $135k on a new S55 AMG and it has been in the shop a half dozen times already. My3 favorite Benz of all time are the 1970 S600 SWB, 1971 300 SEL 6.3, and the 1979 450 SEL 6.9.

I'm also not an XJ specialist, but I have heard that the XJ6s are still one of the most reliable drivetrain-wise to this day. They will be older, of course, but maybe you can do a new paint and some interior refurbs to bring back the shine and comfort. Definately can be had for under $5k. If you've got more money, i know the newer XJs share the tranny and engine as my XK8, and they are also very robust. I just can't recall which year the XJs got the ZF tranny and such. I know it wasn't the same year as the xks (2003).

RE: Got the fever again!
The 2000 XJ8 i got rid of had the ZF tranny that went bad. Makes no sense, ZF is a BMW tranny yet i've not head of any tranny problems with Bimmers. Anyway got my eye on an absolutely beautiful 96 XJR, metallic bourdeaux with dove interior. 1 owner, 130k miles. If anyone has ANY pointers regarding this model i'm all ears!

RE: Got the fever again!
These cars (XJ300's) are very reliable, as has been said before. Of course due to their age they'll have higher miles, but they can go well over 300,000 miles with regular maintenance. I bought mine at 140,000 miles for 4k and have since invested over another 4k (expensive paint job, out-of-this-world stereo, etc). I plan to put another 2k in the suspension, wheel bearings, ball joints, etc and it will be good as new. They are not necessarily bad maybe good for another 10k miles, but would like to get it over with. As I said, there cars are bullet proof and will make you proud.
Let us know of your final choice.

not sure if $5k is nothing to you or if its a big deal but id def try to spend $10k for a good example, im by no means an expert and havent look at that body style in a while although, i have seen some nice ones around for $7-8k range, at least in the cosmetics. the xjs got the 6 speed transmission from zf in 04, it prem. on my 7 series in 02. very good unit overall! stype has it 03 and up, range rover also uses it 04 and up. let us know what oyu get

RE: Got the fever again!
I basically treat purchasing a car,(an outright purchase anyway), the same way i play in Vegas. Set a realistic limit to what i'm willing to spend and fervently stick to it, other wise i'm simply micturating into an oscillator. 10K would pretty muchspell a rather nasty and expensive divorce i think..lol. Tentatively set to test drive the XJR Tuesday. What is the ride like in comparison with my old XJ8? I really wish i had the knowledge base with Jaguar i have with Mercedes, it would be alot easier.

Hi inert............ken @ british parts is very ver yknowledgable on the older style jags.......perhaps pm him and ask his advice?
Good luck with your hunt.
On a side note...Queenmb, it may not mean much, but on top gear a short while ago they produced the top n bottom list of cars as voted for by the pulcic. The Merc ML range got slated big time as the " least satisfying car to own" category I believe.
Please believe me when I say I'm not slating MB as personally I think they are a good manufacturer, just quoting what the masses voted for. Also the dealers did not perform well, although this was in UK so may not be an issie for you.
