Default Greetings from N Ga

Greetings,

I am a college prof that enjoys restoring classic cars as a hobby. I recently sold an 81 Porsche 928 and in its stead have purchased a 2002 Jaguar S Type 3.0. I was originally planning to just fix and flip the car because I got it for such a good deal with only 43k miles on it, but after driving it home I was blown away by the quality and am tending toward this being a long term rather than short term restore job (eg I can drive it in the meantime). I have a nice stable of cars including an 86 Porsche 944 NA 5spd and a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T Avant Quattro 5spd (definitely the longest named car Ive owned).

So here is list of issues on Jag:

Headliner needs recovered
Turn signal switch hi beam toggle is broke and stuck in hi beam mode
Front windows both are not working, I was told they are off the track, currently they are taped in place and I checked and switches work fine and motor is getting power
Moisture accumulates in trunk under spare

Biggest issue (and reason I got it for a song) is a few days ago car was driving fine, PO gets in it and wont engage starter. That was when he got fed up with it and just wanted it gone (hence my ability to buy it). Initially was thinking I would have to haul it but then after he fiddled with it then it started fine. Next day he starts it and drives it to work and takes key out but engine keeps running. He ended up just letting it sit and idle for like 3 hrs while I got myself together and drove to get it. After driving it home I pulled engine fuse to kill engine, starts fine each time after just tested a few times to see. After killing engine headlights stayed on so I pulled batt cable to preserve battery.

My initial diagnosis is the ignition switch which is also very very wiggly. Ive already ordered the part but would appreciate any installation advice that you have to offer. Well, advice in general is very appreciated. I couldn't own the cars that I do without the forum communities since I don't have access (or funds) to go to a dealer for my euro cars, so thanks in advance for any advice that you have to offer.

That's what happens with SO MANY of our Jaguars; little things are ignored and stack up into HUGE annoyances. At that point we get them so cheap it's sometimes ridiculous!

Then with a bit of effort (more than should be required if things were kept up) and a little money (or a lot depending how long it was ignored) we have a pretty reliable car!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Default Ignition short term solution

So I discovered in a forum on the topic of ignitions not turning off motor to wiggle key between positions. So I gave it a try and when you turn key very slowly off, it turns right off no problem and lights staying on are just on timer and turn off so no issue there. I am still going to replace ignition switch but short term its driveable as is. This car is amazing still soaking in that its mine. I look forward to our foruming together thanks for all the welcomes.

Welcome to the forum, prof neal! Thanks for joining us and showing your Jaguar, you're doing great job on it! A lot of good info here regarding mods in case you are thinking of doing any. Check out some of the garages and you may get some ideas. Good luck with all your plans and keep us posted!
