Default Greetings. S Type questions

Greetings people. Currently in the Wirral and just acquired a tidy 99 S Type 3.0 Manual. Reasonable mileage of 76k, stamped book.
I have a mild rumbling from the rear, I'm guessing Diff, and I've read this isn't unusual. Car has new mot so I'm guessing and bearings or diff leaks would have been noted as advisories?

I noticed a smell of hot oil from the rear of the car yesterday after an hour of motorway driving.

what's the most likely cause? Car runs and drives beautifully apart from the mild rumbling.
