Default Hello, not an owner YET, just have a few questions

Hello from southern california, studying at ASU now and I love jags. My gma has a 1998 Daimler in england with picnic tables and all and I really lover her car, wish I could have it!

In spring 2011 I bought a 95 E300 Diesel which I currently have. I was looking for an economy car, but didn't want a boring asian car, and it has been good to me so far.

I love luxury-if it is cheap enough and the benz although nice-it is very durable but not luxurious. Of course it is pretty loud being a diesel, which I don't mind when getting 27/30 mpg

I am willing to downgrade on the mpg because I have found this white 1998 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas, for about $4k

It has had 2 owners, well maintaned, clean carfax, etc it looks beautiful.

I am worried though about what I hear regarding the durability and long life reliability of these types- another main reason for the benz purchase was because the reputation for the diesel is that it never dies- and the way I drive it being 16 years old 150k miles I believe it.

Here is my worry- I buy it and love it for a month or a few, then the tranny or something goes out leaving me with a $3-$4K bill and that is why I wouldn't buy it.

I can afford expensive maintenance- the benz is $100 for the oil change every 5k and just had new brakes put on for $700. Just not a huge repair bill.

Give me some of your thought I would love some advice!

Welcome to the forum.

Although I love Jags, you say you have recently spent the best part of $1000 on the Merc.

Obviously you don't do your own maint'.

I would keep the Benz, 150k is nothing, and maybe start to learn how to do some jobs yourself.

I actually do most car work myself, and worked at a repair shop part time for two years as my first job.

But now for the sake of parking on the street and limited tools while at school It is easier to pay for it to be done.

Anyway that wasn't my question - if the tranny went bad I would still be screwed because it would need to go to a shop.
