Hello from Spain
Hello everyone,
I'm Richard from Madrid, Spain, and I ws wondering if someone could help me with a fix I'm in regarding my Jaguar XJS.
Here's the story; I recently purchased a Jaguar XJS 4.0 1996 Celebration Model (it's a beauty!) from a Jag dealer in the UK. I drove it to Spain where I currently live and am attempting to import it. I'm faced however with a serious problem - the Spanish authorities refuse to import the car given that the VIN number on the registration documents and the VIN number on the chassis do not coincide. I was told by the UK Jag dealer that the car was manufactured in the UK and then imported into the US, whereby the US authorities carry out various regulations to ensure the car complies with US regulations. To do this they alter the first 11 digits of the VIN number hence the fact the VIN numbers on the chassis and those indicated in the registration papers are different. The Spanish authorities therefore require me to obtain a letter or form from the US (either from the importation authorities or Jaguar) indicating that the two different VIN numbers actually refer to the same car.
I am at a complete loss as to how to go about this, hence why I am here. I am desperately hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to how I can obtain this letter or form.
I look forward to hearing from someone soon.
Kind regards to all,
Richard

Wow. Seems like you have a bit of a dilemma there. Maybe some of our many memberswith international experience will be able to help you. My first inclination though would be to search US DOT(Department of Transportation). I would presume they would have been the ones to alter the VIN on your
car. Good luck.
Oh yeah, try this for starters. It may give you some insight on possible form numbers and such. [sm=signs003.gif]

Hi Richard, I would call the UK Jag delear that sold you the car and have them sell the story they gave you to the Spanish authorities. The story they gave you may, or may not, be accurate. If the Dealer is unable to satisfy the Spanish authorities, it seems to me the car deal is null and void and they owe you a refund for the car and payment for your time and trouble. Good Luck!

Hey Richard n welcome to the site..............sounds like you got yourself a beautiful car as well as a dilemma that needs resolving.
I'd go with Joe and make the dealer that sold you the car your first point of contact and ask for assistance which I'm sure they'd be happy to give. Failing that try contacting the DVLA in swansea UK for assistance....I woulda thought with a few phone calls etc it should be fairly easily sorted.
Good luck

RE: Hello from Spain
Thanks to everyone who replied, I've been in contact with my dealer in the UK (on several occasions as you can imagine), and he has provided me with the contact details for the dealer in the US whom it was purchased off. I've also been in contact with the NHTSA and am awaiting a reply from them. It's one of those things that takes a little time and enormous amounts of patience.
Thanks again for the advice and I'll get a picture of my baby on here soon.
