Hello from Steve and Roobarb

Hello from Steve and Roobarb
Roobarb is my 1994 Daimler. And my 6th very used XJ40.
Named because it's predecessor was called Custard, (as it was painted in a spot custard yellow colour, I couldn't help myself) Roobarb has tried valiantly to serve me well over the last five or six years.
Roobarb has taught me much about mechanical matters, not least that if you want the job done properly and with some respect paid to your older jaguar, you have to either DO THE WORK YOURSELF, or at the very least know exactly what needs doing and what systems are likely to be affected /can be broken if you let a mechanic loose on it, and then try and monitor their progress... To be fair I have never tried main dealer service, becuse every time I consider it, the likely cost seems to exceed that of a newer replacement car...
Fortunately, my few decades spent as an electrical and mechanical engineer, have given me some useful skills/insights, and I can rectify most of the electrical tomfoolery myself, given half a chance, but I still struggle.
Particularly when the fault lies INSIDE of a module...
I hope I will be able to expand the knowledge base a little, either by asking the right questions, or by providing answers on the rare occasion where I might have one.
Little known XJ40 facts:
YOU can get home when the radiator fan explodes, dumping all your water in a 1989 xj40 even if home is 45 miles away. You set the cruise control for 55 and watch the temp guage like a hawk on inclines, but mine did it... Twice (two different cars, both got me home!)
The clock illumination lights are "Ring" R509TDBK and make sure you change them as a pair! Some of the interior fairy lights are unobtainium now, but I found I can remanufacture the old ones... I'll do a follow up if there is any interest or after I am sure I have found and sourced every bulb that needs replacing. (if your car is nearly twenty years old, you may as well do the whole damn lot at once rather than "painting the forth bridge")
I intend to offer this as a service locally, because no-one else seems to, and I know not every one has the mix of skills required to dismantle an interior, dismantle the modules, replace the bulbs, clean the bits that need it whilst they are apart, and put it all back together again as good or better than before without breaking more things in the process..
Think that's enough of an intro. It just remains for me to congratulate the members of the XJ40 community for having the discernment to own one of the worlds most underrated cars. You know what I mean...

Hey Steve welcome to the forum.
Looks like you will be useful in the XJ40 section.
We are always interested in well documented 'DIY' repairs, but you are best advised to get a good feel for the forum, so that you don't fall foul of our Non Vendor advertising policy. (Generally we prefer to adopt a 'live and let live' but we do have to draw the line somewhere).
Good to have you with us.
