Smile Hello from Stow Ohio

Recently purchased a 2004 XJ8 for my wife, after two major operation's, in hopes of raising her moral. Her 1990 Honda civic, has been a great car, had it since new. After all of this, just no way that i could buy her a new one to replace it!! Been looking for a good, affordable, replacement, car for her for some time now. Found this place that sells nice looking high end cars, & has good ratings on the computer. Saw this white, 04 XJ8, with 85,608 miles on it, wanted $10,800 for it, asked if $8,500 out the door would buy it, & he said no.Called a week & a half later, asked about $9,000 out the door, & was told he could make that work, when could i come in? Took it home for the boss to see, & drive. Needless to say, she loved it, so it's in our garage since Sat.
Now the fly in the ointment, a good sized spot of oil on the floor!_frown:
What's the most likely problem, & is it likely to turn ugly, or is it marking it's territory like a Harley? From my handle, it's apparent that maybe i ride Goldwing motorbike's. Have a serious addiction going on there, two 84,1200 standards, a I200 Interstate, & a 91 Aspencade, NONE of them leak a drop of oil, or anything else! Do ALL my own work, have a small motorcycle shop, to try to make back a little of what goes out.

What a great Get Well gift is that!
85xxx miles is just well loosened up. You'll get another several Tens of Thousands of miles out of that car; or rather, your wife will.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thanks, for the kind welcome's. This is the first Jaguar & the most beautiful car either of us has ever driven, let alone owned. Amazingly fast in a subdued manner, much like my Wing's, but in a different sort of way. Hoping the oil leak is a minor issue. Want to catch up on any & all ignored issues that may need taken care of. Just found out the other day there is not a transmission dip stick to be found under all the plastic, but a STUPID sealed for death trans bound to have problems. It's been over 20 years with nothing but Honda cars, & Wings, in our garage, & no leaks, love their econo boxes, but a Car like this is a different animal. Is there a way to put a dipstic into the trans? If so one could change the filter, put in as much fluid as it will take, put the plug. Unplug the supply line to the radiator, blow some air into the rubber hose you just unhooked, that blows the rest of old fluid into torque converter. Then put a long piece of hose on the metal part of the supply line, hook it onto a container big enough to hold all the fluid in the trans. Put a long funnel in dipstick tube, KEEP THE FUNNEL FULL of trans fluid, start your motor. After the fluid changes from dark to light, you will have all new fluid, run till warm, check level on dip stick, & add more if need be. Old school way to flush, as well changing the old filter.

Welcome to the forum Wingrider,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Modern Jaguars aren't known for leaks so you are unlucky but you'll find most of us do fluid changes on the 'sealed for life' transmissions at around 70k miles as preventative maintenance. My approach is to change all fluids on a new (to me) Jaguar so I have a baseline for future maintenance and it catches anything which may have been missed or is overdue regardless of what the service book stamps may show.

Follow this link XJ XJ6 / XJ8 / XJR ( X350 & X358 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X350 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Welcome.

Graham has nailed it. That "catch up" will more than likely sort the beast.

Lots of info in the X350 section.

Thanks again for all the welcomes.will possibly be a pain asking questions till this sorted out. Does anyone know where the factory shop manual for the 2004 XJ8 can be had? Tried Coventry West, ordered it $75 on Pay Pal, three days later Ebay said no longer available.Always try to have the factory shop manuals, as well as at least one other to look at for anything that i own. At this time have paper ones for everything, as well as some, on disks as well, for my bikes. Right now i have no manuals for this car at all, & the check engine light's on. Friend is supposed to bring his code reader to tell me what i need to replace, or repair, but he is still working a job. When he gets a chance he'll stop by. Always seems to know how, to fix what i don't , or have needed the tool for the job.

you can use the following link to download the workshop manual - scroll toward the bottom and download the X350 Workshop - US001 through 006. You will also find DTC's, electrical diagrams etc.

Thanks again for the welcomes. Been looking for the how to's for my wife's 04, XJ8, most everything seems not to include this model, the X series seems to be what is covered. Not to complain, but seem not to be finding information i need.
