Default Help - info needed, looking at a 2005 XJR

Hey all,

I work at a Honda dealer, and we had a lady trade in a 05 XJR, black with Nav, and we have it pretty cheap. It needs: tires, rear rotors/pads, passenger HID is blow out as well. I am unsure if it is ballast or bulb, as I cannot seem to get in to check or remove it with any ease.

Question is, is it worth it to get the thing at a great low price, or is there a LOT of hidden monsters in these? I have had a STI and it was pretty salty for maint. so I am used to that, but longevity-wise I have no idea. It has mid 60k miles on it now.

Just hoping for suggestions
Thank you,
Steve

Hi Welcome,

05 XJR is a very nice car.
Tires - expected, probably on the 2nd or 3rd set now.
Brakes - a little expensive if Brembo, but if you're affiliated with a dealer you can take care of this relatively inexpensively.
HID- if ballast, front bumper needs to come off - not a big deal.

Hidden monsters on this car:
air suspension - compressors go bad, and sometimes the air springs. Air springs are $1100 a corner, just for the part.
TBs - routinely fail on this car. About $1300-$1500 dealer replacement
ZF6HP26 - sometimes have torque converters fail; some shifting problems that is corrected with a friction modifier, or reflash.

None of these idiosyncrasies would stop me from buying this car at a good price.

All the Best,

The air suspension worries me...when they go is the car un-drivable?

Welcome Mountain. You will be more likely to receive tech replies over in the XJR section, albeit from Stevetech. He gets around the forum quite a bit (even if he is stuck in NM) LOL.

One thing you don't say is what sort of price you can pick up the car for. If it is pretty much trade-in price I would go for it whatever. Have some fun and then maybe move it on for some ++$
