Default Help with transmission XJ6

I have a 1988 Xj6 Vanden Plas, transmission stopped working with no warning at all,acts like it is not in gear. Transmission fluid checked, is there anything else I can check, or just need a new trans, once it cools off will work 115K

Welcome to the forum, Bunchy, and sorry to hear about your problems. Being an '88, I'm assuming that you have an XJ40, so you will want to post your technical questions in that forum. I've already got a few ideas circling... Just to prime the pump, I'd be curious to know what letter is illumined on the "j-gate" when you put the car into gear, and whether your car feels like it is in neutral or whether it is locked into a singular gear and unable to shift (what we call "limp mode" around here.)
Anyhow, welcome again, and we'll look forward to seeing you over in the XJ40 section!

Follow this link XJ40 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ40 section for help, advice and information.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Scott, thanks for your help, I just checked the lights you mentioned, all show as it should

How do I determine if my 1988 Xj6 VP is a series 1 11 111 or series X40 ?????

bunchy,

A 1988 would only be either a Series III or an XJ40. Easier to explain with pics.

The Series III has rounded wings and round headlights:

The XJ40 has squared off wings:

The XJ40 usually has twin round headlights but can have single square headlights. I think the UK VDP spec always had the square headlights.
