Welcome.
Its been a loooooooong time, but I seem to remember on my S Type 3.4 that there was a panel on the side of the trans tunnel to access the nuts on that "hoop" bolt arrangement, and then the starter "fell" out the bottom??????.
OR,
Did I have the oil filter off, and slid the starter forward and out, really don't remember 100%.
The members in the MK2 etc section will know.

Welcome to the forum Stanley,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
Here's the relevant section from the MKII Workshop Manual:
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/m...40-daimler-61/ to the MKI / MKII forum and this one https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-xj81-25/ to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You can also visit the Australia - Victoria / Tasmania Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...a-tasmania-94/ to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forums.
