Default Hi from Cape Town

Morning all

Greetings from sunny Cape Town. Managed to find what I'd been looking for for many years: a BRG XJ6 Mk I manual with overdrive. What I couldn't have anticipated was that it would pretty much have been a one owner car with 135000km on it. Who's been a very lucky boy then?

It does need a little work; the fuel seems to have gone stale in the LHS tank so selecting that is a no-no at the moment. I had to clean out the carbs, but now she goes like a rocket!

I was going to trawl the forum this morning for an answer to this: do the cranked exhaust tailpipes help to prevent exhaust gasses from entering the car? The previous owner fitted straight tailpipes and I imagine that when the driver's window is open it seems a little "gassy" in the car. I have checked the exhaust system itself and there do not appear to be any leaks.

Welcome to the forum joepanels,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Your XJ6 looks great. The Southern Hemisphere climate is certainly kind to these cars and they don't show any of the serious rusting which afflicts ours in the UK. I hope the young tyre inspector is doing a thorough job!

One of the complaints from owners when the XJ6 Series 1 was introduced was the moisture coming from the exhaust pipes with a cold engine soon dulled the chrome on the rear bumper and over riders. In the rainy UK this even caused the over riders to rust within a few months. The cranked tail pipe design was an effort to prevent this. Not entirely successfully as I recall. I bought a 1972 XJ6 in 1974 and had to replace one of the over riders which had rusted through. I can't recall problems with exhaust gasses being drawn into the car even with the chrome tips removed.

I can see you've already found your way to the XJ6 tech forum
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.
