Default Hi Newbie with first Jag. Offering Thanks!

Hi all

Approaching fifty and just bought my first jag! Couple of weeks ago bought a 2001 S-Type 3.0 V6 Auto. It a base 3.0 model on 119000 miles , no leather (not bothered) and no front fogs (bit mean). It came with original service book and manuals in the leather case. Appeared to pile on miles in the first five years but was being serviced twice a year at a main dealer. Next owner serviced it at a jag specialist for five years. After that virtually no evidence of work except front pads.
Having previously read this forum had idea what to look out for. Had a short test drive enough to get up and down the box, drove nice no funny clonks etc. Engine smooth but oil was black. Has new battery and all electrics work. For a car that spent the first ten years living in London bodywork not too bad , few car park dents and minor scuffs and all the headlights had severe cataracts but looks good from twenty feet away!. Decided that at £900 there was a decent car underneath and with a couple of hundred quid, some elbow grease and TLC would be very nice. Drove 50 miles back round m25 and was impressed how well it sat on the Motorway for a 14 year old car. On day four it refused to start and was relieved that after giving the throttle body a good clean it purred back into life at first attempt. (phew!) Have done engine service and refurbed the outside of the front lights. Insides are a bit dirty as well but I have an idea of an easy fix that if works I will post details of. Most of the time the tranny changes very smoothly but just occasionally hangs on a bit too long so hoping oil and filter change will help. After that just a brake service should have it sorted as they are a bit squeaky but working fine.

I am an enthusiastic amateur with the spanners and willing to give most things a go but would struggle cope with out forums like these so a big thanks to anyone who has posted tips and advice, your help has been and will be invaluable.

Cheers

Andy

Welcome to the forum Andy,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

It sounds like you've already found your way to the S-Type tech forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link UK & Eire - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Thanks all,

Think I've updated my signature. Once the oily bits are sorted will give her a polish and wax then post a pic.
