Husband really wants this car
Husband is super excited to buy a1997 Jaguar XJL (XJ6L sedan) it's almost his dream car. We saw it listed at a dealership for $2995. It has 166285 miles on it. Looks beautiful cosmetically. Is it worth it? Is the cost of ownership crazy high compared to Nissan, Honda, Toyota? We can do some work ourselves, but nothing too crazy. That is if any of it is DIY. We've worked on all our previous vehicles. But usually take them to the shop for complicated stuff. Please advise. I would love for him to finally have his Jag, but not if it's cost prohibitive. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forums.
I will stay out f teh Yes/No thing, coz I am down here, and markets etc avery different
The X300 (this car) is possibly the most robust Jaguar ever made. Reliable as any other commener, easy to work on, YES, has its quirks, of course, its a Jag..
I have had 2, 1st an XJ6 3.2ltr (you never got that awesome engine), and the 2nd an R (Supercharged) version. No real issues for me, and the XJ6 did well over 400Kkms before we parted, silliest move I ever made.
Good luck.

Hello, Vanessa,
$3000 might seem like a lot of money for a 26 year old car with over 100K miles on, but in the current market that's not bad from a dealer, especially anywhere on the West Coast of Merca.
For sure it will have loads of Character compared to any of the Soulless Japanese imports you mention, and you'll certainly be able to tell which car in the parking lot is yours without checking the license plate or seeing which one answers your key fob, as you'll doubtless have to do with the others.
It might need some extra attention, especially in the beginning, but almost Nothing is beyond DIY with the help of members in these forums, who will know this car front to back and inside out. Worst that can happen is you let him drive it for a while until he gets tired of it (unlikely, but it does happen sometimes) and then sell it on. But he'll be happy for a while at least, and perhaps for a Long time to come.
I wish you success.
