Default I bought a Jaguar by mistake

Hello From Edinburgh

I couldn't help it ....it was just sat there looking all forlorn and sad and lonely and nobody loved it. Anyway, I'm 500quid ( about 670dollars) lighter of pocket and now got a '97 XJ300 4.0 that wont charge and really needs repainted. Seems to go well when it starts though and it's lovely inside and surprisingly rust free for a Scottish example.

Whilst looking her over, remove one of the cam covers and see if the secondary timing chain tensioner has been upgraded to the latest metal version. If not, her motor is on borrowed time.

There are many threads you can read through using the search function of the X308 forum.

If they haven't been replaced already, the primary and secondary timing chains, tensioners and guides should be replaced or catastrophic engine failure is the result if one of the tensioners or guides comes apart.

Welcome to the forum trampintransit,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the X300 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham, I believe he mentioned he has a 4.0 litre car, so would that be the X308 forum?

Welcome.

Yep, 308 is the V8. Near same body etc, just 2 more cylinders and those chain issues.

The X300 is the 6cyl, either 3.2, 4.0, or 6.0 V12. These do not have the chain tensioner issues of the V8.

Good luck.

Cool ..this thread seems to now have v=become rather too long for a 'neewbies - intro' thread doesn't it. I'll look elswhere on the forum of ask directly about tensioners n stuff. But certainly, my car is a 6 and the upper tensioners have been done so I'm hoping that's summat I don't need to worry about .

I'm sure you'll come back to check so here's the answer:

1997 was a model change year in the UK. Both the X300 six cylinder and the X308 V8 were marketed here.

X300 was available in both 3.2 and 4.0 litre versions. I had a 3.2 Sport and it was bullet proof for the 120k miles I put on it.
