Default ID some parts

Hi Gang
I bought an 88 auto XJS V12 in the UK in early 2022 had it all revitalised over 10 months by a terrific team in Southend on Sea (Dave Overton of Overton's Vehicle Restoration the most straight up family you can ever hope to meet and that's a huge rarity in the auto world). My Jag had been very sparingly used for about 20 years and even then it was in SORN for quite some time. I was lucky enough to get a complete history from new every service repair and accessory with detailed records all with a huge file of receipts. It has been a one family owned car much loved by a now quite elderly Lady and her family from new. We toured UK and France with hardly a glitch and then shipped her home to Australia, That's all for another story another day.

Now I have renewed every part from flywheel to 4 tyres, out with the sloppy old auto, a new clutch, new Getrad 5 speed gearbox new drivetrain all hung in a new rear cradle new diff new suspension new wire Dunlops and new tyres. That's all done with some fantastic supply of parts, advice and help from Ben at Simply Performance in Kent. I'm just installing a brand new entire leather interior from Alldridges in Wolverhampton, well done Siraj your expertise and eye for detail are second to none. Can't wait for its first test drive.

But there's always a But, and yup its in that spaghetti maze under the ski slope! I have fixed the rewire to bridge the old ignition ON only in "P" (with a red bridging wire and label for future ID cannot seem to upload photos here) But and here it is I cannot fathom how to rewire the reverse lights so they work. Ben has confirmed which of the two gearbox mounted switches is the reverse light switch and that has a single pole (Its the most front one on the upper LHS of the gearbox)
My old gear lever had two micro switches mounted side by side. I can see which microswitch was that ignition on only in P park but how does the second microswitch fit into the picture (yellow/brown active and black earth) Then there is a round gismo (with 2 heavier duty green wires) operated by the Gear lever radius allowing its spring loaded pressure switch in the radius to release passing N onto gears R, 1, 2 and 3. So in P and N that second micro switch is activated. That's got me what is its function?
Left over there is a red/black stripe wire which I think used to be connected to the old reverse switch on the old auto box which I can reconnect to the new manual box?
But how will that work bc there's only one blade terminal on the gearbox switch? Then since I have removed the old auto gear lever how does that gearbox wire send its "turn on" signal to the reverse lights . What am I missing here?

I'm hoping someone else has come up with the same question and a bit of guidance would be great Thanks
I cannot seem to upload photo to help

Welcome to the Forums.

This is NOT the Tech Section, but its a long weekend and the BBQ is about to happen, and the drinks will flow, so the laptop, car keys, phones etc, will be hidden for safety, mine, not yours.

AS you clearly have a sense of humour, V12 ownership demands that, here goes:

That 2nd micro is more than likely the EARTH for the Starter Relay, so that thing only works in P or N.

That round switch is the reverse lights switch, at least it is on all my Series cars, and the XJS cars, but my XJS's stop at 1985, the newer do zero for me, ABS, Marelli, OBD, YUK, sadly.

More will be available in teh XJS Tech Section just a tad further down the Home Page.

Almost noon, beers cold, see ya.

My diagrams show...

Cruise control inhibit switch: black/white and yellow/purple wires
Neutral safety switch: black/green and black wires
Reverse light switch: green/brown and green wires (this is the round switch)

Cheers

Welcome to the forums Andrew,

Good to have you with us. I like to read about Jaguars being used for proper touring and look forward to more about yours. I crossed the Spanish border at Irun this morning in my F-Pace, staying in the Loire Valley in France tonight and crossing the Channel to England and home tomorrow.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xjs-x27-32/ to the XJS forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the Australia - New South Wales / ACT Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...-wales-act-93// to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Sorry forgot to mention its a convertible and that adds to my rewiring difficulties
I'll have a crack at sorting the rewire today and thanks for the heads up ID'ing the wire colours very helpful
Didn't mention that the electric hood now is not working till I figure out how that circuit is wired
