Default Ignition Amplifier for 1985 Jag XJ6

Does anyone know what kind of a job it is to replace an Ignition Amplifier on a 1985 XJ6?
I had some work done at a dealership and the car died when my wife was driving it home. After it was towed back to the dealership, they said they could find no problems, it started up and worked fine. They said the only thing they could think of is that the Ignition Amplifier MIGHT need to be replaced, however, it is working fine at the present time and they cannot guarantee that replacing it would solve any problem.

The car has only 24,000 miles on it and is in "as new" condition. The problem is it has only been driven about 200 miles in the last 20 years and that's to and from the dealership to have the gas drained and have it restarted.

The amplifier can be replaced in 20 minutes. It's bolts to the front of the intake manifold; has just four wires.

I'll add the the amp has just three parts inside: a diode, a capacitor, and an ignition module.

99 times out of 100 it's the ignition module that gives trouble. This is a common GM part, AC Delco part number D1906.

So, rather than $200-$300 for a new amplifier you can almost certainly repair the existing amp with a $40-$50 part.

Lots of archived discussion on pros/cons of using an aftermarket module versus genuine Delco module.

All that being said the problem you're having could have many causes but, of course, intermittant faults are tricky to isolate. As guesses go, the amplifier is as good as any other....but IMHO have them replace just the module rather than the entire amplifier. Once the amp is removed from the engine it only takes a few minutes to open it up and swap the new module for the old.

Cheers
DD

Doug,

I feel like a real *** for not having left you a thank you yesterday, but as you can probably tell I am new to this forum (the first forum I have ever took part in), and I hadn't figured out how to do so yet.
You gave me more information in a couple of lines than I receive from my local dealership in 40 years.

Thanks again

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature (see my post #3 for procedure).

It saves other members having to look up the details from your previous posts and gets a better response with relevant advice.

Norri,

Thanks for the welcome. I will try to get my information updated per your request as soon as I can make sure I am doing it properly.
This is the first time I have ever interacted with a forum and as you can tell, I really don't have a clue.
I personally am not a mechanical person and I count on dealerships or other mechanics for maintenance. What I have found since joining your forum, is that your members have much more knowledge about repairing Jags than anyone I've ever talked to. The people that we deal with always just replace--not repair--and it either works or it doesn't!
It's nice to be a part of a group of people who actually know the mechanics of a Jaguar.

Thanks Again!

Reclusive Jag Owner,

As you are new to forums, I've added vehicle details to your Signature for you. It should appear with your next post.

Let me know if you want it to show something extra or to look different.

Graham,

Funny thing. Yesterday, I was following your instructions from earlier to get to the control panel. When I got to the signature page, it already said "1985 XJ6", so I didn't know if I was on the right page or if I was hallucinating! Now it all makes sense.

All I can say is "thanks again."
