Default Introduction from London, UK XJR 4.0 v8 owner

Greetings Jaguar members.

I am James D from London, UK.

Back in 1999 my current XJR 4.0 v8 was born.
It had about 4 different owners over the 5 years prior to me buying it. (2 dealers being owners)

It came with a used Jaguar warranty which was useful as the car had about £2000 worth of labour and parts spent on it during that 1st year under warranty.

Prior to me buying it it had also had a new dashboard clock unit and the new engine, as the original had the notorious lining which destroyed the block.

I had it serviced by a Jaguar dealer nearby to myself and was very happy with the car.

About three years later it failed an MOT due to corrosion penetrating the chassis underneath the doors affecting the structural security of the car and required lots of work.

I decided to go ahead and have many thousands of pounds spent on it at a local luxury car body shop who stripped it down fitted jaguar original parts welded them on and fully painted, sealed and put extra layers of winter protection to the car underside to try and prevent this level of corrosion happening again.

It ran fine for another 2 years where it failed another MOT this time under the front suspension again rust had eaten through the body in a different place.

I again decided to have the same luxury body shop do more work again with genuine jaguar parts welded onto the car to maintain integrity.

Upon them finishing the work they rang up and said "Do you have any problem starting the car?"

I could not think of any, other than sometimes the key fob would not always unlock the car the 1st time the fob was pressed. New batteries did not seem to adjust this.

They rang me up a day later and said they are having to take the car on a trailer to Jaguar and get them to sort it starting.

The following day they phoned and told me the car was ready and I went and got it.

It ran without issue for the next 12 months.

I had a minor fault where the left hand (Passenger in the UK) door would not lock or unlock with the central locking. I did not really want to pay £200+ for a part as this was a very minor inconvenience to me.

Once about 6 months after that I was driving to work and suddenly the car decided to turn on the windscreen wiper and flash the hazard lights whilst I was driving. The wiper stalk and hazard button did not affect this operation. I pulled the car over stopped the engine waited 1 minute started the engine again and continued my journey. I wondered what it was but put it down the the car being slightly damp as the car is my 2nd car and only used 1 maybe 2 times a week.

I used the car without incident for the next year.

My circumstances changed and I was no longer needing to travel by car to get to work so I was only using the Jaguar once a month just to keep it turning over and occasionally taking the battery out charging it up and putting it back in for my next journey to warm it up/ give it a run.

This pattern of car usage remained the same for the next 3 years.

However back in March 2015 my monthly journey in the car I got about 1/2 mile from the drive when the wiper turned itself on, hazards started flashing and the dashboard message centre said restricted performance warning.
I drove the car immediately back to my drive and put it into park with the engine running so I could empty a plastic drain cover of leaves that sits unaccessible under the car most of the time.
When I entered the car again and tried to move it forward to where it is parked normally the Car would not allow me to move the Gear shift lever away from Park.
I Pressed the brake pedal repeatedly and the lever would not budge.
I tried a few things before deciding I had better quickly run upstairs, turn my computer on a do a quick search on youtube / google for moving the Jaguar out of park. Found where to unscrew to put a solid shaft down and disengage the park lock and managed to put the car in the place it is today.

Since then I have had a lot of time and trouble getting it to be a car again.
