Default Just purchased: 1967 420.

What an impulse buy it is, but I am happy. 44,000 original miles. $4000. Needs a lot of TLC but everything is there! On the fence with what to do with it.

I had Basset Jaguar in Mass give me a quote to restore, starting with a 10 grand down payment, ouch! Also considering going electric.

I have done a few electric car conversions, and although this guy is really heavy, I wonder, without the power train and everything gasoline related, how much it will weigh...

I live on Fishers Island and the speed limit does not exceed 30 mph, so I might go for a higher torque setup, as I plan to let golfers at the golf course I work at rent it for use around the island for a fee.

I have a big order for A123 AMP20 cells coming up and I wouldnt mind throwing in some extra money for this project.

Let me know some opinions! New to the Jaguars!

If I do go electric, does anyone want to buy gasoline related parts from this car??

When you get going on the project, you should start a restoration thread in Mark V - X 420G - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum section.

There's a lot of interest in older Jaguar models across the membership.

Welcome from Australia..
You have brought the widest bodied Jaguar ever built. These are now very rare around these parts and a complete car for restoration are sought after. From a Jaguar enthusiasts forum to gut it and electrify it does seem a pity I my opinion, having said that it would be interesting to follow your progress.
Good Luck and look forward to see how it goes.

I will be! Beginning work on it this fall. I want to at least start by getting the project plan done first. When I put the money in perspective, this is not something I am going to sell anyway. So why worry about any kind of resale value? Going electric is crazy, but also more affordable believe it or not. I would love to restore it mint to it's gasoline state... especially since it only has 44K on the clock.. I just fear how much that will cost. It has a gas tank problem for sure. I have a really good guy who does sandblasting and painting in a nice facility. There really is no rust on this car. Which I find so hard to believe, being on Fishers Island, but the quality is there. Really nice undercoating which I assume is from the factory. Inside just needs a really good cleaning and some odds and ends to find online!

There's always horrors lurking behind the sills on 420 and early XJ's. The quality of the steel used in the 60's wasn't good and I'll be amazed if the structural integrity of the inner sills isn't compromised. Rear suspension mounting points also take a hammering.

The undercoat which was not done by Jaguar at the factory in those days, will have been applied by the dealer or a PO and can cover a lot of rust.

That's the downside. On a positive note, I've seen a lot worse than that turn out well.

Welcome to the forum.

It doesn't look too bad from the pics, but as Graham said a lot can be lurking under the cills.

Crazy idea to go electric, I'm still trying to decide how I feel about that to be honest, but good luck with it, better a restored but electric 420 than seeing it on a scrapheap.

Well from the looks of it there is no rust on the sills, although I havent taken off the aluminum sill there, so you guys have me scared... Overall though, the rust is hard to find, it really is...

After seeing under the hood, it makes me want to keep the gasoline motor real bad. What a beautiful motor. Not sure until I do some tests and find out what I need to put into it. Going electric is within my skill set. Working on this gasoline motor, maybe not so much. Full restored with 44K on the clock, how much can this thing be worth?

The description 'fully restored' means different things to different people. The highest values will only ever be achieved by matching numbers [original chassis + engine + transmission] vehicles with detailed history in better condition than when they left the factory.

Even doing most or all of the work yourself, it will cost more than the final value. You have to want to own and run any vehicle where you choose to commit to this kind of restoration.

So I managed to break or the person before me, broke the cable to open the hood. How should I go about unlatching it? Through the grill?

You need to slide item 14 to the left to release item 17:

Here are some pictures from under the hood. Does anything look out of place? I thought it all was relatively clean with no leaks and not too much rust.

It looks complete with everything in the right place.

Here's a restored example for you to compare:

The chrome air filter is not original.
