leary new jag owner
ok, so I bought my first Jag. I consider myself a car guy, I've owned a 67 camaro convertable, a 73 dodge charger and about 25 other cars in my 30 years of driving. Most all have been american cars. I've heard that european cars are expensive to work on. It seams there is some truth to this, although I had an opportunity to pick up my 01 xj8 for a great price! I'm from Huntley,IL and look forward to all that owning a Jag has to offer.

Like Bill said,,Welcome! You must be a more savvy on these computer things as you have managed to put your car "in the garage" something that has eluded me.
R/E your comment " expensive to work on" Actually mine costs no more for parts etc than a locally built ford..might need parts more often but ....With your ability I bet you could put a Pic of it on here as well. Show me up...I cannot! Cheers and Enjoy,Neil

Welcome to the forum stp1967,
Jaguars are expensive if you use the dealer or even an indy. Doing much of the work yourself brings the costs way down. All the information is here and forum members can also help source parts at the best prices.
Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 section for help, advice and information. The HOW TO section at the top there is a good place to start.
Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User ID button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You can also visit the US Mid West Region section by following this link Mid West US - IL IN IA MI MN MO OH WI - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forum.

Welcome stp1967, and greetings from the Midwest Region. You'll meet a lot of similar 'car guys' here on the forum. A Jag is a wonderful car to own and drive. Find yourself a good independent Jaguar technician to do the work you cannot do yourself, and you shouldn't have any problems keeping it on the road and enjoying the drive.
Cheers!
Scott

Thanks to all for your support! I actually joined this forum before I bought it, so I could research possible issues. I purchased it from a friend who got it from a deceased family member. The car sat for over a year and a half. I've changed the oil, checked all other fluids, and after a few hundred miles of driving has developed a " tick" on start up that goes away shortly. I've now parked it so not to do any damage, going to remove cam covers, inspect things and go from there. I'll keep you updated.

When you get the covers off, if anything looks strange with the chains or tensioners, posting pics is the best way for members who've been there before with this issue to assess condition and advise on solutions.
