I've always love the e-types, xj220, and an appreciation of the aluminum XJs...but that was it - otherwise I thought the brand was boring and stale, made poor quality cars for old men in flat caps. That was until the ftype 2000 prototype was on ye olde top gear (back when Tiff Nedelle Quentin Wilson was on it with a much younger Clarkson) that was reporting on the British Motor Show.
I watched that show every week with my dad religiously, it was one of the only things we did together as a matter of ritual....and no car had the effect it did on us- we jabbered about it for hours that night and dreamed of owning one of them one day. We talked about it for weeks actually......Pretty sure it was this one:
Promised myself I'd get one just like it one day
Of course it was never made a reality and stayed only in the concept form....and my dad never had the means to own one and the dream faded...and Jag went back to boring (although the top performing XKs were interesting).but the F2000 always stayed with me.
As soon as the F-Type was released, and the teaser images came out I recognized its providence immediately (and noted how the motoring press didn't really bother to make much of the connection to the concept car)... I guess as Ian was the designer of the F, and the 2000 was Lawson, but there is clear influence there
Anyway, it's launch took me back to that living room sitting with my dad on the sofa watching Topgear- I never dared think it would truly make production...surely it will be still born!
I've lusted for an F-Type ever since it came out, and made all the more desirable as Ian Callum designed it, due to his stewardship of the perfect (IMHO) modern designs of my dream Marque of Aston... The Stars had aligned. I was pretty sure one day I'd sit in my very own, as an Aston is just out of reach, this would be the next best thing, but still a Holy Grail car for me in many other ways.
I plan to make ownership a reality very soon, albeit not the guest performing versions as much as I'd like to have an SVR or P7!! Something more humble...
