Looking into Jaguars - Need info!
Hey all. I appreciate you taking the time to read my post, your feedback will really help.
I'm getting out of the japanese tuner phase and looking to get something that I can appreciate as it is. IE, Keeping it stock so I don't dump all the money I wont have into modifying it. A luxury sedan will do that for me.
I'm looking at something in the price range of $10,000 - $15,000. A 2000 or newer. A warranty would be a huge plus. Low miles are essential. Is that realistic? If I found something that fits that, what issues are the S and X Types known to have? I really don't want to invest that kind of money into a car that I will need to spend thousands more on repairs. If a Jaguar is not for me for this reason, let me know! I'm doing as much research in advance because I don't want to end up with a gorgeous car that runs like a box of rocks.
Thanks!
Jon

RE: Looking into Jaguars - Need info!
Hey there jd..........If you're lookin at the X type, really wants to be 04 or later if possible. There have been a few issues here n there that mostly will be sorted on a vehicle of that age
The 2002 X-type was introduced in May, 2001 as Jaguar's first (and so far only) AWD production vehicle. The base model was originally priced at $29,900 USD, making it Jaguar's first entry level luxury saloon. Quickly nicknamed "Baby Jag", the entry model came with a 2.5L V6 engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. An optional 5 speed automatic listed for about $ 1500 but despite the low price, the US base X-type came equipped with leather, climate control and power everything.
For those seeking more power, a 3.0L V6 w/ 5 speed automatic offered significantly better performance although the basic 2.5 liter engined version is quick enough for most drivers, especially with the 5 speed manual gearbox. The larger engined model was retailing around $35 000 but included the automatic transmission; the manual gearbox was a no cost option on the 3.0
The North American standard trim package reflected very closely the European SE, with chrome bumper blades and leather seats, whilst stitched cloth upholstery was standard in the European "Classic" option. Interestingly, the base model North American X-types and Classic European models were supplied w/ Dorchester gray grille vanes inside the chrome grille surround, whist the chrome grille vanes are only supplied in the European SE version. Both European and North American models offered a "Sport" package as well, with subtle differences between the markets.
As with many new models, the X-type had a few 'bugs' associated with the initial model year, including:
[ul]Leaking/dripping washer jets
Defective boot latch
Faulty J-gate selector
Vibration issues (Sometimes poor tires/balancing, sometimes a prop-shaft problem)
Faulty drivers door latch
"Squeaky" rear seat
Faulty Thermostats, resulting in "High Engine Temperature" warnings
Weak center arm rest
Dash vents pop up[/ul]
Most of these quirks have now be corrected under warranty and shouldn't be a problem if you are looking at an early X-type.
The above although not an exhaustive list should give you some ideas. Please don't be put off as most of these problems have been ironed out on later models or been resolved under warranty etc.
Hope this gives you a little insight
Cheers

Thanks Jim! So besides these minor quirks, an 04 x-type 3.0 should be mechanically sound? I'm looking at a few with under 65K. No warranty which is kinda a bummer but workable if there aren't known powertrain issues. Small things I can fix, but anything extensive, I'd like to avoid. Also, what would be an acceptable price for an 04 3.0, >65k miles?

Hi Dennis.....KBB?
Spill on that one plz mate?
Jd....speak to almost anyone here and they'll tell about the noises / issues with the transfer case. Again, don't throw your hands up in the air in despair.....just as long as you know about it.
Most peeps tend to have some sort of warranty wheter it be whats left on the car or an extended one.
Try askin FJTour resident Jagtech for his input too. He'll be straight and to the point and be able to offer good inside info too
