Default Is my engine scrap ????

Hi there, don’t normally post on forums but desperate times call for desperate measures. Just had my jag in for MOT and new front brakes and I’ve noticed this noisy tapping from the engine for the past 6 weeks or so but put it down to the fact that I do little journeys mostly in my car and perhaps it’s ready for new oil (last change January)

having watched loads of vids on YouTube etc it might appear to be a “noisy hydraulic lifter” think I know them as tappets from growing up with mechanics ! BUUUUUT the main dealer have told me it’s terminal and that first I should let them remove the top of the engine and put a camera down (£320) but realistically they ‘think’ it needs a new engine, enter a quote of £9000 !!!!! Now my experience of ANY main dealer, not specifically just Jag is that they like to take the **** but are they telling me the truth do you think or would some type of treatment stop the tapping noise.

I’m now scared to run the car in case, as the dealer advised, it might blow the engine! Should I try to mask the noise and get rid quick ?? Really don’t know what to do for the best but I know I don’t have £9k spare. The car is on finance with £14k outstanding and the main dealer offered me £5k to take it off my hands !!!

HHHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPPP !!!!!!!

Welcome to the Forums.

OOPS

I suggest a re-ask on the XF (X260) Tech Section, they will have good sound suggestions.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forums Ronnie,

Franchised Dealers nowadays (and Jaguar aren't alone in this) service vehicles and fit new parts. They have neither the time nor the skills to rebuild engines or transmissions. The £9000 quote is clearly designed to do one of two things:

1. get rid of you
OR
2. make a lot of money from a straightforward engine replacement

I doubt any "treatment" (if you mean the various types of snake oil claiming to restore compression, reduce friction etc) will be effective. A visit to an independent Jaguar specialist for an informed opinion is a better option. Both of these have good reputations:

Welcome... I believe Graham (GGG) made some excellent suggestions. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty, frankly I would hesitate to cross the dealer's door again (especially given the circumstances). You did not indicate which engine your Jaguar is equipped with, but the problem could be as simple as an issue with a VVT cam phaser. That said, letting a strange noise from the engine on an expensive car go for six weeks is seldom a good idea and can lead to very expensive issues down the road.

I good Jaguar "Indy" needs to be on every owner's speed-dial.

Oh Dear! That does Not sound good; no pun intended.
For your future reference, Any time an engine starts to make such an unusual and noticeable noise, Do Not continue to drive it until you have that noise checked out. It *Might* merely be a lifter, or it could be something much more serious.
Engines shouldn't make "noisy tapping" sounds no matter if you make short trips or long ones.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Default Thankyou everyone

Your comments are really helpful and yes I know I'm a stupid blonde for letting it go so long.
I've been in touch with jagtech in Doncaster and they are going to take a look at it.
again thankyou to you all, I'll keep you posted xxx

Sorry to hear about your misadventures. First, don't trust something like that to a dealer - they will make it A LOT more expensive for you. Second, these engines are naturally noisy and ticking can be the result of many different things, like a fuel pump, high pressure injectors, supercharger, chain tensioner... if your 2016 car was regularly serviced I would be surprised if this noise would require engine swap.

The next step is to find independent reputable mechanic that knows Jaguars and take your car there.

Please come back here and let us know what they tell you.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Ronni.
Just because you're blond doesn't mean you're stupid, you merely didn't know and that has Nothing to do with hair color. Now you've learned something valuable you can use for the rest of your life.
