Default My first Jag - 2000 XK8 Convertible in Yorktown, VA

I'm new to the forum and always wanted a Jag. Bought mine from an ebay dealer in Ft Lauderdale. Picked it up last week and drove it a 1000 miles home up I-95. Exterior is in great shape and the interior is very good but needs a few touches. I have a few mechanical issues (handbrake, rearview mirror) and look forward to help from this forum.

I plan to do most work myself and so am looking for recommendations on service manuals, part sources, etc. - I'd post a picture of my "new" ride but haven't figured-out how to do that yet!

Default XK FAQs very helpful!

Thanks...looked at the XK FAQs last night - very helpful! I'm already using the info to replace the rearview mirror and plan to work on the handbrake issue this weekend.

Default Handbrake sticking problem solved

handbrake problem solved - took the seat out and removed the handbrake cover cleaned everything up and then used lots of WD40 on the cable where it enters the outer sheath. Worked the handbrake up & down while adding more wd40 seemed to do the job - works fine now.

Welcome to the site jrburley. What a nice place to live. I spent a fair amount of time at Yorktown during my first career in the Coast Guard. As you've observed there's a wealth of information here. Please continue to share your experiences. Enjoy your ride.

Greetings jrburley! If your handbrake is pulling the cables to each rear wheel hub (you can see that Y clamp underneath the car) you just may need to adjust the pads. I did that one (might even be in the FAQ, not sure) but as I found out the hard way, one brake adjuster was in properly, and the turning resulted in a tightened pad. The other side was in backwards, and the same adjustment left me loosening it. I didn't know this until it was entirely apart and I was changing the brake shoes.

JTIS, best source you can have for DIY parts identification and some basic removal and replacement.

Default pic of my 2000 XK8 Convertible

Thanks for the upgrade - here's a pic of my new ride right after its first bath. Car was very well cared for - not a scratch or dent on it and only 75000 FL miles.

I'm really enjoying the car now that the handbrake is fixed.

I'm contemplating an OBD reader/scanner now so I can clear those occasional "check engine" lights - still weighing the simple/cheap approach versus the full-featured ones that allow access to all systems specific to the Jag. I'm leaning towards the autoengineuity product line as recommended by Matt (I think).

I to just bought my Jag 99 coupe. I bought it in Pitsburg and drove it to Kelowna BC. 2500 miles one way. I had some issues with warped brake discs and badly worn tires before I left. Of course the dealer lied about everything regarding the condition of the car and did not show up when I arrived. As it turns out the car is excellent condition and is a real head turner. I know the earlier 4 litre engines have an issue with the poorly manufactured cam chain tensioners, if this part goes so does your engine, it is a $3500 repair to replace the part I would hate to think what it would cost to rebuild the engine. If you hear a rattle when you start up you should be concerned, get it checked.
