Default My Intro to Jaguars

Hello Jaguar enthusiasts. My name is Steve, reside in Oak Harbor WA and the new owner of a 2005 X Type 3.0, 106,000 miles. Actually, my son is. Bought it from his HS ROTC instructor for $2K. Unfortunately, our introduction to Jaguars is not a pleasant one. The TC recently cracked open like an egg. I used to love working on cars, but no longer. The dealership wants way too much, $5,500 plus. They did point me to a website for searching parts at wrecking yerds. Found the same year X Type in Sacramento with only 39,000 miles, VIN is only 3,000 production units earlier. The transfer case cost me $800 with free shipping. I found a garage that specializes in European cars, the manager used to own an X Type and knows very well about the elusive top bolt that I have read about. So, without hesitation, he said he pulls the engine out to swap the TC. 20 hrs labor, $2,500. Other mechanics quoted me as little as $900 but admitted they never did the job. So now, is it worth paying a mechanic more than I paid for the car...

Welcome to the Forums! I am sorry to hear about your transfer case and in my opinion, I would take the cheap job. I cannot think that a seasoned mechanic (even if they do not normally work on jaguars) cannot complete this job correctly.

Welcome to the forum Steve,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

You asked the question and my answer is unequivocally that I wouldn't even consider putting $3300 into a 13 year old Jaguar with 106K miles on the clock. It would be DIY at zero labour cost or cut my losses and scrap it.

Going forwards, even after this repair, if you or your son don't plan on maintaining and repairing the car, it will cost a LOT of money. There's only two ways to run an old Jaguar - a well stocked bank account or a well stocked tool box.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x-type-x400-14/ to the X-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Welcome to the forums.
I love everyone of my cars. No matter how old or how many miles. I'd teach the boy how to do it.
Enjoy the drive.

Welcome.

Also with Graham and Elinor.

A good car for Son to learn on, and that is what my Son did on his S3, and the Daughter on her S2. That was many, many years ago, and they "thank" me for that tuition time.

Good luck whichever way you go.
