Default New to forum but not to Jaguar! In North Houston,TX

Hello all,
I am the proud owner of a 2013 5.0 XJL. I've had it since 2014 (manufactured in Dec 2013). It currently has about 45k miles.

I've been too faithful to the dealership that sold me the car- I've been getting regular maintenance there since it was new... but eventually it became repairs... and, although I know they were charging me an arm and a leg, it was worth it for a car that cost over $100k. Well, repairs have only become more expensive over time. Just last week I took it in with a coolant leak, and after that repair, plus front brakes and rotor replacements set me back $4500, they also wanted another $5500 to replace the front and back upper control arms. This would be $10k in repairs for a car that is "worth" about $20k. Anyway, I've spent now over $15k in maintenance and repairs over the past 3 years, and I realized it was time to either buy a new car, or learn to do this stuff myself. I love my car and couldn't find another I wanted more. I thought this would be a great place to ask for help and also to get manuals.

It looks like I already have work to do- my driver side door is not locking, and based on the reading I've done, I need to replace the actuator. I may also need to replace the headlamps. Thanks for allowing me into your club!

Hello, Tony,
Repair costs have got completely Stupid over the last few years! The price of Everything has gone to the moon! Add to that, your car is now 11 years old and most dealerships do Not like to work on anything, even if they sold it, over about 4 or 5 years old. They'd much rather sell you a new one. If they haven't suggested that to you, I'm surprised. Selling new cars is, after all, what they're in business for.

Working on a Jaguar isn't very different from working on any other car, it's just that Jaguars have Soul and appreciate it.
There is almost Nothing needing repair that can't be DIY if one had proper guidance. You'll certainly get that here!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Absolutely learn to DIY. My father retired quite early, primarily because of his philosophy of never paying anyone to do anything that he could do himself. With the economy the last few years, I don't know if anyone will ever fully retire ever again, but that just makes it that much more important to DIY. My father did it before Al Gore invented the internet (back then we went to the library and hoped to find a book or magazine article), but today, DIY knowledge is so much more readily available. I sometimes need professional help with diagnosis of complex automotive systems, but the great thing about this forum is that 95% of the time, somebody, somewhere has already had the same problem, figured it out and posted the solution. Heck, in about 25% of cases and growing, seems like somebody has posted a "how-to" video on youtube.

Just be careful tho. Cars are like potato chips. You can't stop at just one. After a few successes, you'll see a battered old car for cheap on FB Marketplace like the one you had in high school and think "Hey, I could buy that and fix it up good as new." Next thing you know, you've got a half dozen classic cars in various states of repair and back to paying mechanics just because you've taken on more than you have time for.
