New to the forum and paranoid from all the information
Hi,
I just registered today.
I have an 86 XJ6.
It is all original, including paint, and in beautiful condition.
I drive it on my days off and it has not let me down.
The most beautiful car ever made.
But I must confess to being unfaithful.
We just bought a 98 XJR.
An incredable 1 owner car.
I guess we lost our bargaining power when we both said "WOW"
when we stepped on the gas during the test drive, with the owner in the back seat.
The car runs GREAT! And is one of the fastest cars I have ever driven.
My only concern is the timing chain tensioner.
We plan on getting this done ASAP, but, should I be concerned that there is going to be a catastrophic failure without notice.
As I said, the car runs great and there seem to be no issues.
The PO is only letting it go because he bought a Porsche Turbo and doesn't have the garage space for 3 cars.
I have read all the information on various websites.
These tend to make you paranoid.
With no obvious issues, should I be worried or can I drive the car for a day or two before getting the mod done?
I can afford the car, but I don't want to put in a new engine unnecessarily.
By the way, the car has 147K, but was, by far, the best car that we saw,
by far.
Thanks,
John

Welcome to the forum!
Oh one other thing you need to put your car details in your signature. I am speaking of the Year, Make & Model. Without it you may not get the input you are looking for.
Please take a moment and read the information provided to you explaining the rules. Be patient and enjoy the site.

Update on Tensioners
Hi,
First, I would like to thank everyone for the input.
Now I would like to give an update.
I just had the secondary timing chain tensioners replaced.
I took the car to an independant mechanic in Pasadena.
He had the best price and experience at the dealership.
Both tensioners were cracked in several places.
They could have let go at any time.
Especially with 147K on the car.
It is so nice to be able to drive the car without worrying if the engine
is going to self destruct.
Went to San Francisco this weekend and the car was incredable.
Thanks again,
John
