New guy - but wife's car....
Hello all. Bought the wife a 98 XJ8 as that is her dream car. Must admit that I like them quite a bit myself. It's pretty clean with 62K miles and only one previous owner. I've now spent hours trolling through the posts trying to learn as much as I can. The car has a couple of issues which I've found a lot of information about already. Anything over 65 - 70 mph, the engine will die and you have to come to a stop to restart. But it always starts right back up. My VIN is much higher than the post that talks about reprogramming and/or replacing the throttle body refers to. So I'm still digging on that one. But thanks to your glorious site, I've found out about programming the home link, fixing that rear door lock that will unlock, but not lock, making the seats look new again, and checking the secondary timing tensioners. Looks like a busy weekend.
About me: I'm married with a 10 year old daughter. I've been active duty Army for about 16 years now and am an Engineer Technician. Basically, have a shop of about 15 soldiers that are mechanics on construction equipment, power generation, hvac, and water purification, fuel distribution equipment. But I know nothing about Jaguars, so I thank you in advance for all of your help.

Welcome aloha! Take a look in the xk8/r threads too, the earlier XJs shared the same 4.0 engines, so many of the sudden failure (restrictive performance/fail safe) messages will be similar causes...though several choices to choose from. You'll at least have some leads to track down in the meantime.
good luck, and aloha!

Aloha!
You'll love your car. There is invaluable information on this site regarding our vehicles. So far all I have had to do is drive mine and work on the leather rejuvinating. I will be doing the cam tensioners later this summer which is something you should do as well if you can't find evidence that it has already been done. The water pump is another issue for our vintage, but mine was handled by the dealer back in '01.
Lots of luck with your wife's new ride, I'm sure she will love it!
