Default New Guy From Midwest, Happy To Come Aboard

I have to say I've been a fan of Jaguars for quite some time. It started in 1965 when I contemplated purchasing my first car, following having had two motorcycles by the age of 17. I had just purchased a new 1965 Honda 305 Super Hawk. but yearned for 4 wheels. Have to admit those 1963 Chevy Impala SS 327 4spd, and 409s making their presence known in my neighborhood, had an influence on me. I was captivated by the 1965 XKE's sumptuous styling, and beautiful engine design, but I was enthralled by performance, aka acceleration. I had raced my Honda at a local drag strip, learning what I could do with its 10,000rpm red line. Bonsai hole shots that kept me ahead of a big Harley over 1/2 way through the 1/4 mile. There were two other new cars that met my performance expectations, one quite a bit more than the other, with each having there own distinctive style that I found appealing. Even at 17, I came to the reality that the one that had its own sumptuous lines which had drawn me to the Jag, and unbelievable performance, combined with side curtains, and small cockpit; was too much speed for me to handle. When I lamented many years latter that I hadn't bought the 1965 Shelby 427 AC Cobra, my mother told me; "Yes, but you would've wrecked it". I told her; "You're Right". I did get a Red 1965 Pontiac GTO with a 4spd. for $2800 out the door. I "tinkered" with it enough where the last time I raced; it was in E.T. bracket, where you pick your bracket E.T.limit. Meaning, if you break out, by finishing quicker than the limit; you lose. My first run was against a Dodge Street Hemi, where I was ahead from the start, but near the end let up, with him thundering by, but too late. Had a 1967 Corvette 427 435hp in the final round. From the start we were side by side staying even all the way to the finish, with no let up. To my surprise my E.T. was exactly at the bracket limit. I was satisfied, and ended those endeavors. I've owned a Black 1974 XJ12L for about 20 years and its been laid up for awhile because of a badly leaking rear main seal, and a leaking exhaust header pipe that because of broken welds has so much flex, it won't break lose from exhaust manifold. I love the sumptuous lines of this car, along with that beautiful engine.

Welcome to the Forums.

Rear main seal on a V12 badly leaking, mmmm, sure its not the gallery end plug just up behind the flex plate on the B bank side. The early engines had a few of them leak. The seals will weep more than leak that I have found.

Good luck.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. Out of necessity I learned to trouble shoot and repair what broke as a result of my to the max excesses. I learned what high rpm shifts from 1st to 2nd gear at 10,000 rpm could do to the 3 side dogs of second gear on that 65 Honda 305 Super Hawk. That was the first time I dug into something like that, and wasn’t the last.

Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on my oil leak. Being that this plug is behind the flex plate, I take it that the transmission has to be removed, along with flex plate to gain access. I’ve heard that engine and transmission have to be removed as a unit.

It's great being a part of a forum, whose members share the same enthusiasm for these special cars. I'm motivated to get my Series II XJ12L on the road once again, so I can enjoy the winding, hilly country roads where I keep her in south central Wisconsin. Will be sure to take pics of what it'll take to accomplish that, and hopefully post them.
