Default New Jaguar owner

I recently purchased a 2001 XJ8. The previous owner said the check engine light is on and it runs rough. I was going to drive it home which is 4 hours but am thinking now I should haul it on a trailer until I know what is wrong. Could the tensioners for the timing chain be poor or should they have been changed already? It has approximately 250,000 km on it.

Welcome to the forum thebender7,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the X308 forum with this issue so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the Canada Region forum by following this link

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome. I would certainly not drive a poor running car any farther than necessary to get to a safe place to stop off the road unless I was absolutely certain what was wrong and that it wouldn't do further damage. Check to see what codes are stored and pull the right valve cover to see if the secondary tensioner has been changed. Then decide if you want to risk it.
