Lightbulb New to jaguarforums, already need help...

Hey there Jag gurus, I'm Brad. I own a...
  • Jaguar 2003 S-type V6 3.0L
  • VIN: SAJEA01T83FM92954
  • Specs
  • ENGINE SIZE: 3.0-liter
  • CYLINDERS: V6
  • HORSEPOWER: 235 hp @ 6100 rpm
  • TORQUE: 216 ft-lbs. @ 4100 rpm
  • 0-60 mph: 8.2 seconds
  • TRANSMISSION: six-speed automatic
  • DRIVE TYPE: rear wheel
  • FUEL ECONOMY: 16/24 mpg (CTY/HWY)
  • DRAG COEFF: .32 Cd
  • CURB WEIGHT: 3695 lbs.
  • VALVE TIME: Variable
  • CAM TYPE: DOHC
  • VALVES: 24

The reason I've joined the forum is because I'm in need of a new engine for this car. I have very limited technical knowledge on car issues and mechanical repairs, but I'm willing to learn (and want to learn). Currently I'm a graduate student in the neuroscience department at UCSD, and I'm fairly convinced that whatever happens under the hood of a car is more complex than the workings of the human brain. So pardon this, if it's a dumb question, but I was wondering if it's possible to replace my 2003 S-Type 3.0L V6 engine with a 2003 S-Type 4.0L V8 engine. I ask, because my neighbor is associated with the auto-auctions/salvage yards here in San Diego, and found a 2003 S-Type 4.0L V8 engine with 62k miles, which he can acquire for me for around 800 dollars. I'm sure it will add some difficulty and cost to the project, but if that cost is offset by the fact that it will only cost $800 for this engine (and that I'd be willing to pay a little extra for the upgrade), I'd be willing to do it. If I could get some advice on this, I would be extremely grateful.

kindest regards,

Brad

Hi Brad and welcome.

In this particular case, brain surgery might be a little more straightforward. The engines in these cars depend on complex data streams being fed from various computers. V6 data is very different from V8 data. Unless you have all these other computers from the original V8 car, I see many tears in your future.

A V6 engine should be easy enough to find.

Default Thanks for the welcome!

Hi Graham, Norri, Steve, Jim, Mikey,

Thanks for the warm welcome, and for getting me oriented to the forum. I'll try to review the guidelines at some point over these holidays. Also it sounds like I should get looking for a V6 engine and stop dreaming.

happy holidays fellas,

Brad

Brad-

Forgot to mention, 2003 and up S-types came with a 4.2L engine, not a 4.0 so the engine you found would not be correct anyway.

Well hello and welcome.
Sadly I am unable to answer your specific question, although I'm afraid you are wrong in your observation and comparison of Jaguar engineering and the Human brain!
The Human brain, even that of the pond life style of Human Being is, far far more complex than anything Jaguar have ever screwed together....
