Hi, I'm pretty new to the X-type and do my own work on the car too.
I guess it all depends on where you are coming from. I also look after an XJS and a Sovereign myself and the X-type is a rather different animal mechanically. Lots of parts shared with Ford and more electronics on board than a space shuttle ! Thus said, it isn't so bad once you get to know your way around the car and the drive is marvellous.
I would strongly advise you equip yourself with two things, aside from some decent tools:
Firstly, an electronic copy of the 'official' Jaguar workshop manual for your car as this will contain all the correct information - part numbers and some diagnostic methods.
Secondly, a decent OBD-II (on-board diagnostics version 2) scanner, they are not really expensive, and learn how to use it. Experience shows that the plethora of electronic sensors on the car are the 'weakest link' and you will find life much easier, sooner-or-later, if you can read and clear fault codes so the car then helps you to fix it.
Finally, welcome. I'm sure you'll find this forum full of useful advice and tips. It will certainly help others to help you if you can provide plenty of information when you ask for help.
