New Memb. looking at a 1984 XJ6- tips???
Hi guys, I dont own a jag, but am looking at a 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign to buy for $900 as a project. Its got a cracked head gasket, and has 250,000 k's, but aside from that it looks ok. Would someone be kind enough to tell me a few things to look for when viewing said car? Common problem areas? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum HeartOfOak,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
A blown head gasket is no big deal but a cracked head could be difficult to repair or to source a replacement.
You've already found Doug's excellent 'Buyers Guide' which covers all the things you need to consider.
The early XJ saloons are excellent for DIY owners but can get very expensive for those who rely on professional help.
Follow this link XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ6 Series III forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.
You can also visit the Australia / New Zealand Region forum by following this link Australia / New Zealand - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in your part of the World.
Enjoy the forums.

I really love the old Ser IIIs ('the most modern of all antique automobiles') so I think it's pretty cool to keep 'em on the road and out of the boneyards.
But, as much as I'd like to save 'em all, the costs of bringing one back to life must be considered. A $900 project car can be a real money pit. If your *end goal* is a Ser III that you can REALLY be proud of it'll almost certainly be much less expensive to buy an exceptional car than bringing a project car up to a high level. Usually it's the cosmetics that soak up tons of money.
OTOH, if you're not concerned about having the very nicest Ser III in your neighborhood you can own and enjoy one fairly inexpensively....assuming all "DIY" labor for the needed mechanical rehab work.
Cheers
