I have a Jag IRS/Dana 44 in a '32 ford hot rod. Rear end was originally in a 1975 XJC. While ordering brakes and seals, I discovered I need to know if the rear is a limited slip differential, or not. Was this year and type, Dana 44, all the same? Will I find info from casting numbers or will or need to open the cover?. I know for the initial burnout, right rear tire left a mark. Is that considered an open or non lsd rear? Any help greatly appreciated

One tire spin is usually indicates an open differential, but a limited slip diff can also spin one tire if the gear oil does not have a Friction Modifier included.
One easy way to check is to jack up one side and see if the tire will turn easily with the transmission in neutral and the E-brake off. (chock the other three wheels so you don't kill yourself) If the wheel turns and the drive shaft also turns, you have an open differential. If you can NOT turn it by hand, it is a limited slip and it will CLONK back and forth a few inches.

Welcome to the forum desertxn,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
PowrLok differentials had a metal identification tag fixed under one of the rear cover bolts but this is likely to have disappeared long ago.
Forum sponsor S N G Barratt will be able to help with differential parts:

The casing number is going to help identify the unit you have.
Good luck and enjoy the forums.

Welcome.
Unless the donor was a V12, and you will never I know that, it is an open diff 80%.
In all the diffs I have delved into over the years the seals/bearings/brakes on a 1975 are the same right through. The earlier cars (Pre 1973 mainly) had different bearings/seals. but the brakes were the same. 1976 saw some Metrication of the brake pipes, but the calipers stayed imperial, a right screw up for the new boys. The change came in 1985ish with the DANA diff in the V12 XJ-S Coupes, then back to the "Salisbury" style in 1986.
