Hello,
I've got an X308 (XJ8) which I've had for a number of years with very few problems. I've only just joined this forum because I have a problem at the moment so needed to look up some information to diagnose the fault.
I bought the 1998 X308 seven years ago when it had 79k miles recorded. I bought it for £3500 with a known gearbox problem which only allowed certain gears to be used. My local independent Jag mechanic rebuilt the gearbox and I've had no problem since. While they had the car they noticed that the timing chains were a bit noisy and recommended that they, and the tensioners, be changed so I got them to do that work too. So I could say that the Jag cost me £6500 if I include the work done on it. Reading the posts here I see lots of recommendations to change the timing chain tensioners, so it looks like I was given good advice there.
Apart from tyres and brakes, I have had very few things that have needed replacing or repairing since the engine/gearbox work, so I wouldn't say it has been an expensive car to run.
I live in NE England and I work away from home, so the Jag doesn't move for a few weeks and then get taken on a long run to somewhere like Italy, the South of France, or Spain.
Anyway, when I came home this time the Jag started, but stalled as soon as I tried to move away. The engine just then turned over when trying to start with no firing. Following advice on this forum, I checked the fuel pump relay (working normally) and the fuel pressure, which is non-existent, so it looks like I need a new pump.

Welcome to the forum Mike,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
I like to take my Jaguar to the Continent too - the only downside is the slog from Durham to the Channel!
Fuel pump sounds the most likely culprit. Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj8-xjr-x308-27/ to the X308 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.
Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forums.
