Default New Member 2005 VDP

Hi all -

I'm a new member with a 2005 Vanden Plas (gold with cream interior) with about 67,000 miles. 4.2 liter AJ34 engine. I'm the third owner. It's a beautiful car! I live near Buffalo NY and had the car checked over by the local Jaguar dealer before I bought it last Fall. It was bought at that dealership and the service writer remembered the car and the original owners. They had service records on it up to 46,000 miles. The second owner was a buddy of mine who wasn't driving it much, so he sold it to me. Anyway, the dealer spent three hours going over the car, including checking and topping off the transmission fluid - for free! Unfortunately, the dealership was sold and I don't trust the big dealership group that bought it.... The air suspension light was coming on intermittently and the dealer said they suspected the compressor was on its way out. They gave me a price on that work, which was OK with me so I bought the car. I changed the oil with 5W-30 Castrol Edge and it went into heated winter storage about a week later. It was on a battery tender through the winter and when it came out in late April everything was fine. I typically change the oil again when summer cars come out of storage but I thought I would drive it for a few days, then do the oil. All was good for about 250 miles, then I got a check engine light on the way to work. On the way home it also threw a "restricted performance" light which went out after a couple minutes. I stopped and heard a soft engine knock. From inside the car it sure sounds like it is from the bottom of the engine. I can't hear the knock when the car is moving; only at idle. It was louder when the transmission is in gear (foot on brakes) and a little quieter when in neutral. So I drove it the remaining 10 miles to home and put it in the garage. I'm pretty good at brakes, oil changes, and work at that level and a bit more, but I have an independent repair shop that I trust for anything much bigger. It goes in next week for them to check the codes and try to see what it is. The original owners were elderly and my buddy didn't drive it hard. I certainly drove it harder than it has been driven any time recently, so I 'm hoping I didn't loosen up some sludge that blocked an oil passage and spun a bearing. But I don't have codes yet and am keeping my fingers crossed since the AJ34 is supposed to be much sturdier than its predecessors!

Sorry for the long ramble, but do people think I would do more damage by driving it about 25 miles round trip to the nearest parts store where I can get the codes read? I'd sure love to have some idea what they are before it goes into the shop!

TIA for any thoughts - I've spend a couple hours looking for threads on 4.2 liter engine knocks and haven't found anything directly on point, but I sure have learned a lot!

Welcome to the forums WNYJaguarFan,

Good to have you with us.

The RP would have been triggered by an engine management issue and there's a lot of cheap code readers will read relevant Powertrain codes. With the concerns over an engine knock, I'd get a code reader to the vehicle rather than the vehicle to a code reader.

It sounds like you've found your way to the X350 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Northeast Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northeast-35/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.
