I have a background in auto restoration and fabricating old school Hotrods. Over the past 3 years I designed and fabricated a replica of a 1930's race car, powered by a Small Block Chevy.
The DMV requires a complete functional vehicle to apply for a VIN/Title, didn't want to invest in a expensive engine without a VIN/Title. The car was designed for a straight 6 or 8 cylinder engine, preferably a Jaguar.
The state approved my application so now I'm looking for an engine. So far I found a 1939 Hudson 8 flat head and a 1950 Buick 8, both under powered and too heavy.

Any suggestions on which forum would be best to post questions about the engine?

Welcome to the forums jayd2,

If you want an in-line Jaguar 6 cylinder your donor vehicle options are as follows. I've put links to our relevant model forums beneath each:

XJ6 Series I, II & III (1968-92) - 4 door saloon
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-i-ii-iii-16/

X300 (1995-97) - 4 door saloon
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj6-xjr6-x300-26/

For the V8:
XK8/XKR (1996-2006) - 2 door Coupe and Convertible
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/

X308 (1997-2003 - 4 door saloon
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj8-xjr-x308-27/

There are earlier Jaguar models use the in-line 6 cylinder but competition (and consequently prices) would be stiff from Jaguar restorers. I would stay clear of the V8. Much sought after by those who have destroyed theirs through overheating or tensioner failure and consequently high cost. Complex electronic engine managment could also be an issue you don't want to tackle

Good luck with your project.

Graham

I don't know enough about the early Jaguar straight sixes to be of much help but I have always been curious how the registration process works for kit cars and homebuilts. I've seen numerous ads that describe where the donor engine came from or even sometimes an entire donor chassis. Sometimes they'll say the car is titled as the year, make and model of whatever it is supposed to represent and other times its titled as the year make and model of the donor vehicle even when there's nothing left of the donor except the engine itself. I'm curious how all that works because among my very long wish list of classic cars, there's some I will never afford the real ones, but replicas may be within reach.
