Hi, I am a new member.

I live in a tiny village on south Lantau Island, Hong Kong. Roads here are, winding coastal roads, with steep hills. I just bought my wife a one-owner 2004 X-Type Estate Wagon, 2.0L (2099 cc, 156 HP), auto transmission, FWD only, no AWD. White exterior and Black leather interior. Made in South Africa. Car has 48,000 KM (30,000 MI), and has been meticulously maintained by the previous owner and is in excellent condition in every way. He provided all repair and service records since new.

My wife loves the car and is considering naming it "Betty" (White), "Grrrrr-Baby", or "Mick" (Jaguar).

I like to do my own repair and maintenance wherever possible, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading the threads on the forum. Thank you for your knowledge and experience.

I have previously owned a 1952 XK 120. A straight-ahead hot rod that needed lots of love and attention, such as, tuning and adjustment about every 200 miles. If not driven, it would fall apart in the garage--bolts and nuts on the floor for no apparent reason. I learned to respect that Jags need to be driven, not babied.

Thank you,
Mikeb

Hello, Mike,
Names are such personal indications of affection! Your wife has come up with some cute ones.
Your Jaguar dumps bolts on the floor to get your attention. Cats do that you know, get into mischief just because they can. Yours seems to have you under complete control. LOL
Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome Mike. I used to live on Lantau too (in the days before they had the airport there!) but moved back to the UK ~15 years ago.

I never owned a car whilst I was living out there, despite being a serious petrolhead, as HK island was too busy and Discovery Bay, where I lived on Lantau, didn't allow cars back then (before the tunnel to the airport gave access). There are some nice looking, interesting roads elsewhere on the island though which I used to see on the bus going up to the Big Buddha! I'm sure you'll enjoy driving your car on those.

I don't know what parts supply is like for your car out there but if you ever get stuck and it isn't urgent then I can probably bring parts out for you (X-Type parts are cheap and plentiful on UK Ebay!) as I have family in Chai Wan and Aberdeen so am travelling out there from UK at least once a year. We normally have empty cases travelling in that direction as we need the space for all the stuff the kids end up bringing back from HK to UK!

V12d6,

Thank you for the kind offer to bring parts back from UK. I will stay in touch and be serious about the possibility.

Regards parts availability here in HK, I am on that hunt today. I am out visiting shops to see if I can find someone with enough English and has fun tracking down parts and working on projects. Immediate maintenance is for wiper blades, fuel filter, oil and oil filter. Ordinary stuff that is probably not difficult to find here.

On the list of future projects is transmission fluid change, straighten up rear wheel camber (top of wheel leans in a bit on both rear axles), and keep my eye on the suspension. The roads here are pretty rough and demanding here as you know.

Meanwhile, car is purring like a kitten and running like a Jaguar.

Again, thank you for reaching out to me.

Kindest regards,
Mike Birtwistle

Mike,

If there's a language problem when sourcing parts, you may find the diagrams in JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalogue) useful. It's available for download from:
