New member in UK planning to buy XJS
Hi All,
Just joined. Names Sean (not a very imaginative username, I know). I live in the West Midlands in the UK.
Found this forum via a google search on tuning V12's. It has took me a few days to read the "anybody achieved 500HP" thread on the XJS forum, what a good read :-)
I am planning to start looking for a XJS in the new year. This (embarrassingly) will be my first Jag. Let me explain and give a bit of back ground....
I am 47 years old, and I have worked for Jag for the last 31 years. Joined as an apprentice at 16 in 1985. Finished my apprenticeship in 1989 and then spent the next 10 years as a technician on the engine dyno's in PD at Whitley. After that I moved on to become a calibration engineer in the petrol EMS department, which I am still doing.
So yes, after all that time, I am a little embarrassed that I have never actually owned a Jag! lol
I have spent most of my life obsessed with V8 engines. So I have had quite a few of those. Rover SD1's/Vitesse's (not sure what the plural for Vitesse is!), LR Disco 2's, an old classic Vauxhall Victor with a SBC (what a laugh that car was!), a Pontiac Firebird and a 66 Chevy El Camino.
Other than that, I have had various other cars with I4's, flat 4's, V6's and I6's. So I think a V12 is long overdue :-)
Not in any rush to find a car, weather is about to turn crap in the UK anyway. So will probably start looking after Christmas.
I fancy a V12 XJS, mildly tuned and with a manual conversion. I don't expect to find one like that, so happy to create my own.
I will start a thread on the XJS forum, but out of interest, is there any body differences between a straight 6 XJS and a V12?
My thoughts are that a sports pack manual 3.6 would be a great place to start for a manual V12 car?
Sorry if I have rambled on to much!
Cheers
Sean

Welcome to the forum Sean,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
You've already found your way to the XJS forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
Your engine experience won't have prepared you for the biggest problem with UK XJS's - RUST. Take your time and choose wisely or you'll be spending more time with an arc welder than a dyno!
You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link UK & Eire - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forums.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
I am quite good with a welder fortunately, one of the advantages of doing a full engineering apprenticeship. And I have had plenty of old cars that have kept the welding skills fresh lol
I will hopefully find myself a car that doesn't need to much welding. I don't really want to buy the best of the best to modify, I would feel guilty modifying a car that should probably be preserved. Hope that makes sense?
But conversely, I certainly won't be buying the cheapest restoration project I find. Buying cheap with these kind of cars is always a false economy unfortunately. I will hopefully find myself a decent useable car that isn't a complete basket case underneath.
Cheers
