I have a 2003 X Type which I have owned since new. The car has given me 80,000 relatively trouble free service. Problems seem to develop when the battery is failing. I have replaced two batteries over the years. The first time, in 2010, the car would crank freely and seemingly normally but not start. The second time, in 2015, I got the yellow service engine light along with the red light. A code reader produced some indecisive codes. In each instance a new battery cured the problem. I think by 2003 Lucas, the Evil Prince of Darkness, had been exorcized by Ford.
It's not actually unreasonable to have batteries fail after as long as they served you. In fact, I think you did pretty well getting 7 years out of the first one and 5 years out of the second one.
